Comments on & Suggestions for New STICKY THREAD: FAQ,Beginners Area, Read First

ok, if anyone has suggestions for which threads on Swaylocks helped them a lot, this would be a great place to post them up… try to keep it beginner-oriented at first.  Tool lists?  how to make racks?  picking a good shape for your first one?  how to measure things?  where does my fin box go? How much resin do I need?  All those kinds of things, it would be nice if the best answers were all in one place.

Well, this one should be first - http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1011708

I strongly back you up, Mike! This thread has got to epitomize all that makes Swaylock’s what it is.

Now, I’m not sure if that’s what Keith had in mind…

Sometimes helping someone out is not giving them a fresh short answer, but pointing them to the more polished, well thought out and well written threads.

I’ll add some:

Barnfields Broken Board Repair Manual:  http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1021318

Rocker Measurement:  http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1024525

…hello Keith,

this idea is ok, but will not lose the camaraderie feel that this forum have?

will not convert this forum in a “prescription” or recipe only thing?

what better for a newbie to have response from seasoned boardbuilders or even fellas that just are a bit more knowledgeables than asker? sharing freshly ideas, tweaking here and there…

is my opinion, may be Im confusing things

Hi Reverb - thanks for the feedback.  the sticky thread was a suggestion by Otis (one of the Sway’s guys), we ran it by Mike Paler and he thought it was worth a try, so it’s open for public comment.

Basically it’s only one thread, and really it’s kind of an index, “where is the answer to this particular question”… if it works well we will keep it.  Some people can’t seem to search for answers, and often there are a lot of answers out there, so for a newbie its hard to tell the good ones from the not-so-good ones?

It could also act as a sort of “best of Swaylocks” list I suppose, although maybe limited to construction/build threads (as opposed to very funny ones, for example).

Not intended to be a new way of doing all things, more of an experimental “introduction to Swaylocks for new guys” idea… I’m quite sure the newbies will still post up lots of questions!!

I think there would pretty much need to be two

not looking to write new ones, just to point to good threads that are already out there.

Afoaf’s “How I Probox” helped me a lot for my first probox install: http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/how-i-probox

Just about done shaping my second board, Bill Barnfield’s rail bands thread was a huge help and I think it would be whether using his system or just looking for a better understanding of rail bands:

Hi Keith

Maybe it’s just me, but none of the links in the new thread work for me. They all take me to the “Page not found” page. I think it’s because all the links have an extra “forums/” in it, ie http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/forums/how-i-probox should really be http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/how-i-probox.

Cheers
Paul

thanks, Paul, I didn’t test the links, DUH!!  will fix.

yes the rail bands thread for sure…

Some of the real gems are tucked away in threads that contain a lot of ''other stuff''. Compiling, for instance, all of Jim Phillips' tips on planer shaping - or kokua's tips on hand lamination - would be a worthwhile project.

I used to do things like that - just no time.  If anyone wants to find them and leave navigation hints, that would help.

excerpt:

A SURFBOARD ANATOMY

BY DAVE PARMENTER

LONGBOARDS: The garden-variety longboard shape is indisputably the most

resilient design in surfing history. A lot of people forget that if the

Polynesians hadn’t finally migrated to an island with big enough trees

to make their olo boards, we’d probably all still be riding prone on

paipo boards. The ancient Hawaiian longboards literally created the

sport we know today. The papa nui went on to bridge the ancient and

modern eras, and is the only design archetype to have been built with

every conceivable material, from koa to redwood to balsa, foam and even

sponge. Today, the longboard is back in a big way and more versatile

than ever. Often debunked for its “old guy” stigma or “unfair” paddling

superiority, the longboard has endured for a millennia for the same

reason we all surf - we love the “glide.”

Board Design Theory

There was one thread I can’t find on stick theory. It was a huge thread that was very good, but I think it was before the forum overhaul and may have been lost. (?) Maybe others remember which thread I’m talking about.

If they would just search the forum (and google) like the forum rules sticky suggests, they would find the answers to most questions. There are a ton of sites that have some indepth write-ups on a myriad of aspects of surfboard design.

First Epoxy Glass Job......

http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/first-epoxy-glass-job-s

I was gonna second stingray's epoxy hand-lam instructions, but I see you just added it to the other thread...

So I guess I'll just say IMO it is a good choice.

Bump.
