compass plane

Anyone ever used one of these:

i havent woody but have used a hand one similar before… very nice. only prob i can see on foam boards is the ends of the ‘shoes’, where the bands are connected look tricky to round over like you would on a normal planer to prevent tearing.

the hand one i had a go with was made of wood, giving you enough wood to round over so it wouldnt catch, get a sharp enough blade and do it by hand i reckon. how much are they anyhow?

Besides, they use a drum covered with sandpaper, not a blade. I think these are used for boat hulls.

might be good for trueing outlines

Actually I was looking at an old record compass hand plan that my local tool guy has, its been weel looked after and is still in perfect working order. I was thinking it would be a lot better than a spoke shave for taking down the stringer in the nose area.

The dial in the middle changes the concave/convex angle of the shoe.

I cam across the powered version while comparing prices on the net and thought I’d post it.

My current project is restoring one of my grand fathers planes, an old sargent block plane about 1 1/2’ long aand very heavy. last night I found his intials engraved in it under ther rust. stripped it down and got the mechinism fully working and smooth. needs a new handle and and the blade shapening and a lot of elbo greass, but they were definately made to last a life time and then some, I can’t wait to start using it

Whoa…

Woody, hey thats cool… I’ve never seen the powered kind, but the handplane one yes. I figure it might actually be awkward to use because a board curve varies over the length. There will be points where the arched base will be a hindrance…

But I know tool freaks who would find a use for one, no matter what!
