Im in the process of building my first compsand,6’3 x 20 thruster shape. It is 1lb eps core,1/2"balsa rails, and 3/32 balsa skins top and bottom.I will be using RR epoxy and 4oz cloth is all I have.If I use 4 oz cloth for both sides of the sandwich and lam the board with 4oz will the board be too stiff for a 6’ 185lb rider?
I use that same lam schedule on pretty much all my boards just out of convenience. Works just fine for me.
The stiffness will really depend mostly on the thickness of the blank. My boards are usually thicker than suggested by bert, so that makes for a stiffer board, but the ones I’ve really thinned out have been plenty flexy.
Another flex factor is the amount of resin that gets pulled into the core from the inner lam. You can minimize that by making the lam really dry, and by keeping that side down (let gravity work for you), while bagging it.
Actually, I just noticed you’re using thinner wood on the skins than I usually do, that will help with the flex as well. Good luck and post up photos!
I use that same lam schedule as well though I use Paulownia rather than balsa. In addition to thickness a domed deck really stiffens up this type of board. The livliest compsand boards I’ve done have been thinner than I would go with a poly and with flat decks.
Thanks for the replies, the finished board will be around 2 1/4" thick,so it sounds like a go,4/4 it is.
Here’s a few…
That looks like a very tidy setup including the board. Did you get a wrinkle in the bag over the board though?
balsa rails balsa deck trouble.
Why do you say that Huie?
dont get me wrong it should come out prety light .
**but f###k i am forever repairing them. **
once water gets in there shite.
** but hey this will lead you to much better ways just dont get lost in all the bullshit**
**keep it all simple
**
huie,
could you share some of those repair issues please?
(perhaps a different thread this topic??)
thanks
I have a balsa compsand that’s been my daily driver for about a year. Besides some minor compression under my boney arse it’s like new. I sold one balsa compsand and gave the guy instructions- if you get a ding, get out, let it dry and repair it before you go back in the water. As long as it’s not your only board, you’re fine. Just don’t surf First Point Malibu!
Or, then again, you’re Jesus. Just use spit and dirt and it will heal!
damn, jesus.
