I’m doing a 10’ 6" Pig paulownia compsand. I’ve got the blank ready to go but I’m wondering about the schedule to use for the glass. I was thinking 4 oz over under, top and bottom, with deck and fin patches. My logic says to put the deck patch under the wood and the fin patch outside. Am I right? Also, is this enough glass with 2mm paulownia for a 10’ 6"?
It’s 18" nose, 16" tail, 23 1/2" wide point 5" back, 3 3/4" thick (Big boy knee paddler)
If you are using 1# foam it will be quite a good schedule, light but strong.
If you are using 2# foam, that would be a fair bit heavier with that schedule, bullet proof.
I tend to use lighter cloth on the inside (2oz) and go for 6oz on the outside, but thats just me.
Deck patches are essential, having them on the inside work great, and makes the exterior glassing a bit easier.
For a knee paddler, i’d recommend on the deck where your knees will go that you have a total of 12 ounces, whether that be 6 oz over and under, or 8oz under 4oz over.
Paulownia can handle the compression with just 4 oz over, won’t delaminate itself like balsa does, but the whole panel needs the extra reinforcement to stop cracking.
Yep, fin patches on the outside are good, but if you have high density foam inserts they are less necessary. But good practice to have them anyway, stops sand-throughs or weakening of the area when grinding down the boxes.
They are going under the skin, so it’s not really too important.
I actually don’t double up my layers… here’s a little secret for yas!
I use 4 or 6oz (depending) under the skin where the foot traffic will be, then just add a bit of 2.2oz to fill in whats left at the nose, over lapping the other cloth by a couple of inches.
Why double up the cloth, when you can just use heavier stuff? That costs more
Thats for a shortboard, the last longboard I did was a noserider, 6oz under, full length. It is it’s own deck patch!
I use Paulownia almost exclusively for skins. My last 9’1" longboard had a bit heavier foam than 1# but less than 2# ( a bit variable - got the foam as a throwaway). 4oz glass under 6 oz over with 2mm Paulownia and has been very durable. I’ve had multiple kids out on it running it into the sand, each other, ect. I knee paddle it pretty regularly and haven’t had any deck dents. My daughter and her friend managed to puncture it by dropping it on the rocks ( but hey it’s to use not to look at and they were having a blast). It’s reasonably light. My friends who ride poly boards think it’s very light.
I have a short board with similar foam, 2mm Paulownia, 4oz under and over which has had heavy use and has some deck dents though no delams.
For a board that long with that light of foam I wouldn’t go any less than 4 under, 2mm, 6 over. Paulownia is briliant wood - super strong for it’s weight. That shape looks really fun - hope you have a great time on it.
I would put deck patches under a balsa compsand, but with the veneer the edge would “telegraph” through and I might sand through the wood. When I’ve done deck patches over I would normally put the patch under the full length glass but, again, I’d get sand throughs at the bump (trying to get it perfectly flat). I now figure that it would be better, if I’m getting sand thoughs, to get it at the edge of the patch on top, rather than in the middle of the full length glass. Does that sound right?
So what I’m hearing is try and get 10oz on the deck, with 12oz under the traffic area.
What if I do 6 under-over on the top and 4 under-over on the bottom, that should be good enough, then I won’t have to fiddle with patches on the deck.
Also, I just thought about this last night, what about venting. I should probably vent this but at this length should I do two? One at the nose and one at the tail?
