Concave Decks - Whats the point of them?

…hello Kayu, a stomp patch do nothing to prevent dents on a compromised PU thickness.

You are right about the PS but I mentioned that on PU foam.

so, do a concave deck on a potato chip intended to radical rip (very light board, no more than 2 1/4) and less normally) is a carnage.

May be with an ultra light density (similar to PS) without the stringer and heavy laminated like the PS, is ok

My words is about conventional PU and build

Hey Huie.

Man you’ve got some nasty looking spiders down there don’t you…ha…

You mentioned sealing it, so I’m thinking stringerless eps or is it stringerless  pink??

Now that’s the deeper spoon - like concave that one might feel “the lower center of gravity” thing  going on…

  *    You and Dave (above) are making me very gealous,(cork)

     Anyway…

A question to both you and Dave:    What thickness core- cork are you using???

I want to buy the thinnest at around 1.3mm., but I’m getting mixed messages  about it’s availability…

I don’t want 2mm. cork  as I feel it will be too heavy when combined with my deck glass schedule…

Hey trowt…

I like the look of that one…

What are the dims.??

The name that immeadiately  popped up for that one is … The Pill…")

Come on Huie and Diverse, you guys got more pics right?!?!?

Post 'em up!

Regarding the original question, I’ve never ridden one but, it seems to me it would add more control.

There was TSJ article a while back where Linden was saying how he loves them on his guns.

He said he doesn’t fall off as easily.

nice lawn dave!

The best board building forum on the planet, and you can’t simply delete a double post?

I made a concave deck thinking the whole time about all the benefits of being closer to the water, lower gravity,  and how much better it would feel.  I found that while going straight or down the line it was great, but once I committed to a turn, I realized that by being that low, I was giving up some leverage to put the board on edge.  I am the farthest thing away from a power surfer, I like to slip and slide and occaisionally put it in the air, I'm skinny (except for the beginnings of a beer belly)and can barely leg-press my body weight...  What I'm getting at is, leverage is key while going from rail to rail.  If you're higher up off of the water, you have a longer lever to initiate the turn, hence it's easier.  Greenough's spoon is ridden with a super low center of gravity and you can use your hands to grab rails through turns.  I think that's why extreme concave in the deck worked so well for that application.

I hate to generalize but, in my opinion, concave decks aren't for the skinny guys..

I’m a big fan of concave decks. Other than the flex and nice paddling pocket, concave decks provide a mechanical advantage to your feet - its an incline plane almost. Less effort to turn = quicker response.

Also, for me, when going backside behind the section, all too often the whitewater ball will push my calves and feet right off the board. I have definitely noticed the concave deck helps keep my leverage against this problem.

So Chippy, Here's a few pic of the concave.  Thanks to...(?) that posted the pic with the glasses, it helps to show the contour.

WoW!  Looks like it's going to be a BIG picture!  Da%$67** it!!  They were big when I previewed them!?

This shows how I shape the rails to get them thin not boxy.  I think the shadow helps to show the contours also!

I’ve been doing ‘em for years.  Kinda feels better for paddlin’, and the extra leverage for toe side.  Only makes sense to me, domed = least leverage advantage, flat = OK, concave = best leverage advantage…  I do thick decks anyway, and step rails.

The compound curve of the concave deck will add strength, and with the compound curves of step rails, it’s a lot of added strength.
