Greetings shapers, Been lurking the site for a while, finally signed up.
Just wondering,
most contemporary shortboards have concave blended out to a flat or v in the last few inches.
Why?
Why not continue off the tail?
any insights or theory?

I dunno maybe to trap or reverse the water flow coming in from the single concave into double to creat lift in the tail area which allows you to drift around your board in a choppy condition?
I have seen subtle concave blends or V blends and I have also seen a double concave that is like a super deep gash stoping about two inch from the tail. Both worked.
Some reckon Channels dont work that well in Choppy condition, cause it
s quiet sensitive to the cleaness of the surface.
Thou I have ridden a Single channel which runs straight through to the end rip hard in choppy condition. But the tail shape wasn`t a rounded square it was more like a bat tail thing.
I Also used to ride single concave in mush or clean condition any time with out that much problem. But the single to double combo did loosen up the board a lot when groveling and putting the board into snaps.
Single concave was more like a deep carving turns and directed bottom turn, it felt like the board was flexing into turns with clean manuever line.
So in my opinion the only thing that mattered the most in any style of surfboard was the fin positioning, the cant and toe angle. Everything else still remains a mystery to me.
On a psb, the short answer is… to add rail rocker in the tail and to get better release behind the trailing fin.
On flatter rockered boards I’ll sometimes do double straight out the back, or concaved vee where the concaves run right out the tail. I’ll do that to add some rail rocker, but keep the concaves throught the “kick” area of the tail for added drive through turns.
a lot of the shorter stubbier shortboards that are in vogue right now have a single all the way through the tail.
putting the double concave / v out the back loosens things up a bit. a single all the way through can feel ‘sticky’
Hmm, Release, I think that word rings true in this instance,
saw a picture somewhere in the archives of a board with single out the back, Looked incredibly stealth, but yeah, very weary of too much single
think next groveler will have fair bit o tail rocker and double out the back, like most things i guess you just gotta try it.
thanks doods.
it comes down to the surfer . guys who like all single con usually push their boards really hard . when you use your skill and muscle the single feels like it has the most BANG .
on the other hand ,
single to- flat / double / vee will require less rider imput for direction changes .
That is so true
