Contemplating Byron Bay, Australia

The chances are good that in the near future I will travel up the Northeast coast of Australia into Byron Bay. I am a young American with aspirations of surfing and possibly settling into a place like Byron, which I have heard has great surf and a mellow vibe. I was hoping people who know could fill me in on the basics; surf, crowds, cost of living, chances of getting a job in a factory (have some experience), etc. Any helpful information would be great. Thanks- bones

Hi Bones I surfed uop at Byron for a week last year, and it is without a doubht a beautiful place. It does have a mellow vibe there, and the locals are really cool. Whilst out there the waves were just perfect for longboarding, especially at ‘Wategoes’ and at the ‘Pass’ where you can score the longest rides of your life!! I mean the waves just go on and on. After 3 hours your legs are shaking and most people walk back up the beach to save their arms!! Rabbit would be the guy to speak to on the other matters of work etc. Have a great time and enjoy (and say hello to the Dolphins for me)!! Laters Peaman
