Have a new 5'10 x 3 inch x 22 wide quad for 1-2 ft maybe 3 foot. I'm 6'1 and 220 pounds and 45 YO for what it matters. I have the fins the shaper gave to me they are pretty small futures 400 in front (I think these may even be rear fins) and 340 at the back (for the lighter grommet says Futures - not either). I've ridden the set up in 3 ft beachies wind swell and am finding it fun but can be a bit slow with the tiny fins, I used Vector plastic fins on the front with same small rears and it was ok but a little boggey I thought. Question: has anyone of similar weight with similar board dims tried the Futures Controllers and how'd they go, they look positively massive compared to my curent set up and the rake looks alien on the front fins....anyway any feedback great.
They can fix a board with no grip. They also stiffen it up.
The rear fin in the Controller set is a good fin. When mated with a normal template front fin, it’s good combo. Unless you can buy just the rear fins, I wouldn’t buy them.
It seems that these are either hit or miss with folks. I was at the Sacred craft and was talking to Rainbow fin co and they have made a set that was similar but smaller. They had found the controllers to be a tad too big as well. Theirs are called the heater. I haven’t tested them.
Not sure what kind of board you have, high performance shape, fish, simmons. Could help to get better fin feedback if you give a better description of your board.
I’m 6’4" 200 LBS and on my 6’0"x22 5/8"x2 7/8" mini simmons quad and I use the plastic vectors 438 in front and double foiled 375 in the back when it’s bigger and I use the double foiled 340 back fins when it’s smaller. I also use those two fin setups on my 6’2" performance quad with great results. Both the 375 and the 340 rear fins work great and I use the 340 rears allot because I can really throw the tail around but still get lots of speed. The 438 fronts for me are a great all around fin good for any board type and wave height. I surfed 6 foot solid beach break with the 438-375 set up on my 6’6" performance quad and they handled fine. Only other set I use are speed dialers on my quad fish, and the Simon Anderson’s on my quad guns.
I used them in this board for a friend - for our local reef - he's loving it - good surfer and goes pretty hard, fins work great. this one is 5'11" - you can see more of the board on quivver.
Hi, so I purchased them, the advice was bang on here. As a set they are 2 big and stiffen this board up to much but are OK but I could see them working on a larger board in juicey stuff.
Tried the front controllers with F400 rears - felt slow....
But using the controller back fins with some Vector II as fronts is a nice balance for me (thanks Dwight), so i have 2 Controller front fins lying around may just give them to a mate to try.
The boehne bros have some new future quads that might work out well for you. Also quads are interesting boards… is it your first quad? You may just be getting used to it, quads with wings tend to feel very stiff and mecahinical, you really have to work them, its not going to be fluid like surfing a keel fin fish for instance, but there is a trade off because once you dail the board you will learn to love the turns and making every section, I love large fins and I am smaller than you, if you are not blwoing the tail out like a grom then bigger fins are the way to go, also experiment with fin placement, large fins in front small in back, same size fins all around, smaller in front larger in back. Find what you like, this is a major personal prefrence, also ask friends for old fins, most surfers have tons of stock fins laying around, that should save you some cash in your test runs, then buy the magic combo in fiberglass or whatever.
Have a hybrid board which is a quad and thruster option set up.....and enjoy but its a more standard shape, this is a shorter fat boy for me so yeah i think I am getting used to it, starting to ride gutters a lot better on this and and am enjoying this fin config, but yes agree about playing around with fins as on my other quad mentioned i put GXQ's on the back with DH2 plastic fins up front and enjoyed it, looks like I have a similar liking with this i.e.plastic up pront with fibe glass fins on the back. The rear fins in the controller are more upright combined with the drivey Vectors seem ok...but yeah thinking about trying the front controllers with rear F340 or F400 to feel the difference.
