Convert .igs / .step files into .s3d or .brd

Hello everybody,
My Name is Philip and i’am from germany, so please excuse my lack of Englisch.

There is nearly no board shaping community in germany, so i hope, that someone can help me here.
I tried out the search function but didn’t found the answer.

I’ve got a board desing in a .igs and .step file. Is there a way to convert these into something like .brd to see on my screen what i would get and afterwards to preshape a blank?

Best regards,
Philip

shape 3d has a import function you can get http://www.shape3d.com/Products/ImportOption.aspx

That’s pretty amazing.
Converting from mesh to more accurate lines is very difficult.
The resulting import might be a bit pixelated

Gruesse Philip P,
Please tell us what CAD system/software your design is currently in, and what type of output (paper prints, DXF flat files, 3-axis NC code) do you need in the end.
Is it not possible to view the board in your current CAD system?
Bitte erzaehlen Sie uns ein bisschen mehr, vielleicht koennen wir danach besser verstehen, wohin gehen Sie mit Ihrem Board-Design.
MfG-

Hi,
thank you all for your answers.
I want to shape a small waves/sommer board, something like the lost bean bag. In Germany are only a few surfshops with 10 boards or so. So I can´t get my hands on a bean bag.
In the internet I found an .igs file with a board i would like. I thought about using board Cad or Aku shaper to get an idea of the board.
But honestly I´m absoluty amatuer in things like CAD/files/Modeling. I just saw a few .brd files on AKUshaper and board CAD and i´m totaly faszinated.

The Shape3d function is a little pricey…

Do you think, it´s possible to convert the file in something usefull or will it be like a cloud of points?

Bye,
Philip

I believe that BoardCAD has an import STL option.
If this is true then I can make an STL for you from an IGES or STEP file.
PM me if you would like me to make such a conversion.

Thank You! I´ve send you a pm.

@ jrandy: Your German ist really good! Did you learned it at school???

Hello Philip-
Thanks, I learned in school and in Germany.
http://lostsurfboards.net/boards/the-bean-bag/
It looks like a good type of design for a first build. Smallish, rounded, etc…
I would try to find out more about the rails and bottom before shaping.
Do you have materials and tools lined up? PU or EPS or ???
Hopefully you get a chance to try Shape3D or BoardCAD for yourself.
It takes a few times to become comfortable, then it becomes fun.
My own process for boards still involves templates and hand tools so having a perfect design on the computer is not needed.

5’9" x 23" x 2 13/16".
3 7/16" Nose Rocker
1 7/8" Tail Rocker

Looks nice
I’d like to use if you want to share the file?

Hi Phillip. Welcome aboard. Since you are just getting started, why not learn to hand shape a surfboard? Mike

Thanky you RDM! Great!

@Mike.
It was my plan to shape a board myself. Then I do some research in the internet and saw software like AKUShaper or BordCAD and I was faszinated about the possibilities of figures the boards.
In Germany are only some “Surfshops” only with boardshorts, T-shirts an 3 or 4 Boards. So I was not able to get an imagination of the dimensions of the board i would like to shape (something like the bean bag?). I think that BoardCAD, AKUShaper can help me with that.

Pre-shape a board?!? Mh. Why not: I´ve got 2 little children, a wife, a job, a garden … little sparetime. Another problem ist, that blanks are not avaiable here in Germany so i have to order them in Great Brittain or France… shiping costs…

But since some weeks I´ve got a garage and my father has got some usefull tools from refitting sailing boats…shape myself?

I think the biggest challenge for me will be shaping the rails and the bottom (vee)…

Do you think it would be a good idea to try to “copy” a board I own to practice shaping? It´s a firewire baked potato.

Haye a nice day!
Best regards,
Philip
