convert Milwaukee to variable speed?

I got a nice condition single speed milwaukee 5xxx sander from ebay, price was right. The thing’s a beast! 11 amps and it doesn’t slow down for nothin. Also have a Black and Decker 7 amp 2800 (3200?) rpm sander, and an overseas-make variable speed 6 amp. I really like the variable speed aspect, and the light weight of the last item, but it’s weak compared to the others.

So, I’m wondering if the new Milwaukee can be converted to variable speed like their 5540 model, via addition of the variable speed dial and module. The parts site suggests the price would be about $30 or so, but through the local distributor only. The wiring and installation looks simple enough…

Anyone do this?

Howzit Honolulu, You can buy a tranformer that will let you alter the speed of the grinder. I know shapers that use these and I bet the archives can help you since this topic has been discussed here before. Aloha, Kokua

it’s called a router speed control, just put a picture of one in the glossary

I’ve used them and they work, but it’s nicer to have the speed control right on the machine, under your thumb…
