convertible min simmons - keels to quad?

i want to use probox fins and set up my 6'0 mini simmons with the options to try it out with keels or quad fins. is this possible or will the two different set ups conflict with box placements. if anyone else has ideas i'm more than willing to hear suggestions.

thanks,

bandito

Yes!  Off to Oceanside Guy Takayama contest will help you Monday my friend. Also if afoaf see's this he has the set-up. Mahalo,Larry

has anyone ridden a mini simmions type board as a quad? i'm looking for suggestions on fin placement and if it's worth it at all. i'll be riding this board in slow gulf coast mushy waves and need all the drive and speed i can get out of this puppy.

thanks,

bandito

I can get you placement deets, but to be honest, I started riding it with keels in the back and it was golden.

The quad setup didn’t really jive when I first tried it.

The caveat is that this was in the early stages of learning how to ride the board, while it still takes me a couple waves to figure things out when I bring it in to the rotation, I’ve never gone back and revisited the quad option…keels seem to be the call for this design.

I use the neutral buoyancy inserts in the extra boxes such that they are moot in the weight equation.

Thanks for posting that cool board again afoaf. The quad fins I see in the board at the moment would not be a choice of mine to use.

The pic below would be the quad fins of choice I would try first, to have a better experience with.

That’s a different Belik template?

Placement details would be cool.
Got any pics with the keels on?
Doing something with a similar tail and want a twin/quad, maybe sneak keels in.
Wondering if the keels are offset back (hang way over)?

Sorry for lagging…

Placement to the BACK of the boxes 11.5" and 6.5"

Forward box is 2 1/8 off rail at the fore and 1 3/8 aft

Rear box is 2" off the rail aft and the forward position is marked by finding the parallel with the forward box as in the How I Probox thread. (3 3/16 in this case)

Now, this setup is a compromise as the boxes are spaced further apart lengthwise and crosswise as illustrated here:

(I used those c-clamps as a relative “gap” measurement)

The non-simmons pictured here just came back from a couple days in baja on this south swell and the board went fkn bananas…fast, smooth…it was like there weren’t any fins there at all…I love that placement and I love that Belik template.

On the simmons, the clustering is not quite the same, so maybe the quad doesn’t work in unison quite the same way…not sure…as I said, I put the keels on it and stuck with them for PURE SPEED!

Yes indeed… higher aspect ratio for wider tails like your PMD nugget, lower aspect ratio for narrower tails.  Thats the way I understand it.   The lower aspect ratio template (shown above by Larry) might work well on your hynson.

NEED MORE FINS!

Thanks for the info, and the pics help.

Man, I miss that board. Finally gonna get the other back to you this weekend Tyler.

can someone explain "aspect ratio" as it pertains to fins for me? are the lower aspect ones narrower throughout the template and the higher aspect ones more triangular and wider through the template? thanks

EDIT: oops, just got schooled by Larry. i had it backwards. the lower aspect fins are the squatier ones and the high aspect fins are the more elongated ones. lower aspect for wide fishy boards, high aspect for narrower boards. lower aspect lock the tail in and you push off them for projection. higher aspect have twang and you get your projection from that... thanks Larry

Chrisp - as I understand aspect ratio it is the ratio of the long to the short side of a fin, wing, rudder, sail, etc....

For example a 12" tall fin with a 3" base (ratio of 4) would be a higher aspect ratio than a low aspect ratio fin say 4" tall fin with a 4" base (ratio of 1).

Hope it helps,

yoyo

niiice, thanks Yoyo

does anyone have an oppinion about glassing in some bamboo true ames bonzer keels in a 5'0'x20 1/2''x2 7/8'' mini simmons that shallow of a fin i think would make for a  super skatey feel to an already skatey board let the oppinions roll

how do the keels go in the FRONT side plugs , anyone tried that ?

and with maybe a small trailing one-tabber in the back plugs...

also , how about a back fin box , for a trailer SINGLE fin [to allow...five fin , or '2+1' options , also ] ?

these are some of the options 'moonie' and i have talked about , if  he makes a "mini-simmons"-type board , some time in the future [before our southern hemi summer , i'm thinking / guessing?]

    cheers !
