I’ve been searching and searching especially locally to me in central florida for a supplier of corecell foam. Fiberglassflorida over in rockledge used to have it but they stopped selling it and will only custom order huge quantitites. If anyone knows where to find this stuff especially in the central through southwest florida region that would be great
Check with any Marine suppy store like West Marine also try Fiberglass coatings in St Petersburg FL 1 800 272 7809
Neither have… now im trying to look for some alternative as this stuff seems impossible to find
The guy at west marine told me he though that home depot had it… dont think so
Hey Bob…
Do a search for Rohacell in your area.
It’s strength qualities are as good as Core-cell and it come in white… Core-Cell is a little off white or yellow in color…
You should be able to find Rohacell in Florida no problem as it’s used a lot in aerospace composite construction…
You want around 4 or 5lb. density per cubic foot, but you can go less or more depending on what your building and how you’re glassing… 3mm. or approx. 1/8" thick is fine for surfboard skins…
It’s European, so it’s quoted in weight per cubic meter I believe… So ask for the equivalent in lb. per cubic foot… Or do the conversion math…
Awesome man thank you very much… Id prefer the offwhite to the yellow anyway for a bottom skin, then i wouldnt have to deal with coloring if it looked bad.
Just looking to use it for a bottom skin for some SUP’s I will be building shortly
No problem.
You’re gonna love it either way…
Core cell isn’t yellow exactly , but it ain’t white either… I use it cause I can get it quickly anytime and structurally for surfboards, it’s really hard to beat… But now that I’ve been lurking around here I like looking at all the painted foam and resin swirl boards and it’s not white enough for all colors without spraying on a white base coat first… The Rohacell would be a great alternative in this respect, and I might start using it a lot myself for this very reason…I have to use up my core-cell stockpile first though…
Pm. me if you have any questions about applying it… I have some tips to lighten and strengthen the structure…
Put some deck patches in on that SUP as well… This is where the stuff excells… You don’t get heel dents and foot wells on the decks using either material, and that’s the intent of using it… Some people say heel dents are a good thing, and cool, but they’re just the first step in composite structural failure if you ask me… If you’re putting it on the bottom of your SUP you can go with a lower density around 3 to 4lb. per cubic. ft to save weight… On the deck you want 5 to 6 lb to stop denting…
I have corecell now that I have been using on my shortboards for tail blocks, and the color is pretty unnattractive if it were to be used from nose to tail for a skin but I figured i would try and color over it somehow. As for right now I still havent been able to find the rohacell in sheets long enough but I havent looked tooo hard yet. Most people seem to be under the consensus that its quite a bit more expensive then divinycell or corecell.
Are you in florida also? Where are you getting your stuff?
Im trying to get away with balsa top skins and corecell bottoms so if these things get knicked in use they wont soak up any water
No I’m in Canada.
And I get my Core-Cell at a place called Noah’s marine supply in Toronto… They have a U.S. location as well, google noahsmarine.com
I’ve heard that the Rohacell was a bit pricey as well but I haven’t bought any yet to find out for sure…
Just a quick search looks to prove the priceyness of Rohacell. I didn’t find anything bigger than a 24" x 48" x 85mm sheet and even that was about $65. One site said any size blocks were available for custom order but I expect the cost may well outweigh the benefits for our applications. I always enjoy materials research though so I’m intrigued.
Thats where I got my current supply, but shipping was a bit much all the way down to florida for such a large item even though it didnt weigh much.
Thats about what I came up with too. I dont want to butt the ends of it together.
