corecork and snapping turtles

Man it's been a little while since I posted anything on here. I bought a new phone that takes better pictures so I can do a better job of showing off. Here are a couple of cool ones:

that's a factory pic from today, I like it because it's a great cross section with some carbon frames going on, some bamboo, some cork, a bamboo cored composite paddle, and my new all composite paddle I'm super stoked on.

those are a few of the corecork. I've been working alot with corecork. I frikkin' love cork as a core; it's not as stiff as bamboo, it's just as green (they just shave the bark), dense as balsa, comes in rolls so it's as wide or long as you need it, looks really really cool, and most importantly the rider feedback is great. I'm super honored to be building a board for corecork to show at a composite show this month in Paris, if you're going to be there please go by the Amorim (corecork) booth and check it out.

Also experimenting with using the corecork not just as a composite core, but on top for traction. The main goal is for SUP traction, but I tried it on my personal first. No ride report, been busy, but I'm pretty sure it's going to work perfectly. Did the highly scientific hose water test.

Kane thought he was just stopping by, but got suckered into some work.

Gotta go to sleep, I'll post some more later..

how did Mayhem like his ?

you’re my hero Mr. Tang…

always got your finger on the pulse… boards look clean as usual

I’ll be at the JEC Composites show in Paris. Will you be there (or just the board)?

He’s real busy, so am I. It’ll line up soon.
Balsa, I wish I could go to the show, just the board this time. If you took some pictures for me I’d be Stoked!

Sure will! Scheduled dates are 03/29-30-31. I went to last year’s edition as well and it’s a blast! Of course, many materials or applications are a bit more “big industries” oriented, but you still pick up ideas to make things a bit different…

It has been a while drew. How are things down in St. Augustine? And who would think that little thing would grow up into a monster.

Hi, i just bought a piece of 2mm (5/64") cork mat that was cheap available at ebay. how does it differ from corecork? I think its used in construction for damping under wooden floor panels.

Hey Florian,

This is not Drew answering, but corecork is specificaly made for composite use. It has specific densities for a specific applications. Your cork you bought also has a specific density that will not be advertised. It is used for construction as you state. If you are using for traction it might ok, but to use it for composite builds you are kind of quessing since you don;t have all the specs on it. I think corecork is already pretty inexpensive considering it is a 4 foot wide roll. PM Drew and he can get you the right stuff for your board application. If you are trying to damp noise and cusion floor panels you got the right stuff.

hi bb30, thanks for the information. actually i saw drewtangs pic of his deck traction pad and wanted to give it a try on my next surfboard. I’ll try to get the real stuff, probably not easy in germany. The cork from ebay has quite a few holes in it, if you hold it against the light there are small holes everywhere. Is that also the case with 2mm corecork?

Hi Florian,

Corecork is out of France I think, so you are very close to getting the correct stuf  more easily than you think.  Two millimeters refers to the thickness and the holes you see through are more of a density issue.

Go to the corecork website for the details. For deck grip only I would use NL-20 density(12 lb density) or greater and use at least 2mm thick. Unless you can buy cork with a density rating I would stay away form it.

Like I said, corecork is made for its scientificly tested composite aapplication.  Once you look ate the price you paid for your ebay stuff you might even find corecork is less expensive.

Corecork have a distributer in Germany according to http://www.corecork.amorim.com/client/skins/english/contacts.asp. If they can not help you, try the danish distributor. They were very helpful
