Cork deck feedback

Thanks for sending me the sample, Drew. I put your money in the mail on Mon.

Before you offered, I already ordered a little roll. It came today and is 1/16" thick. It’s 17 lb / cu ft. Like you warned, I have no clue about the binders and what will happen when it’s glassed. It was only $30 shipped for 30’ x 18" so it was cheap enough to try.

If anyone else wants to try it, I’m in South Orange County. I can bring some down to Oceanside this Saturday for the Anything But Popouts gathering.

Hey ghostshaper what is the Anything But Popouts gathering?

This Sat, North jetty starting at first light

Kinda sad to go over this thread after seeing the thread my brother started about cork techniques.

Looks like someone built a pretty good business model around getting people interested in cork as a composite skin for surfboards. first - build up interest, then secure the distribution rights of the materials, follow that with a patent for boards with cork skins, finally, create a licensing program and mention that the patent will be enforced by the suits.

I think I’ll stay far away from cork.

Shark…PM and fill me in on that please!

The rumor I heard about this situation is not at all pretty.    I hope it’s 100% untrue from beginning to end.   I also hope Drew steps in to clarify exactly what his licensing program entails for both occasional users and power users.

Email Drew directly and find out the truth straight from him -

Drew@inspiredsurfboards.com

He’s a stand up guy with the best intentions. He’s put a lot of time/effort/R&D into cork decks and has been very generous in sharing info and providing corecork to anyone who wanted to use it.

I agree that Drew seems like a really nice guy and a hard working board builder.

I didn’t start the rumor and I’m not passing it along - I’m merely reporting its existance.    If anything, I may be doing Drew a favor by cluing him in to it’s presence.  What he does with that info is on him.  After all, this involves a product he’s trying to sell to board builders and Sways is all about board builders.

I bought this 150’ roll of the (then) hard to find 1.3 mm. x  4’  well before any patent existed or was ever mentioned here or anywhere else…

Where do I send the cheque…

Are patent enforcement laws retroactive ??? lol…

Love this place…

I guess these guys had better fork over the cash pretty damn quick …

Look at the date this video was posted… Now add about a year of product development and you get  a product that was probably built somewhere in 2010…

Stretch is whole heartily paying his fees so that must say something.

Stretch and Lost are in on the program full bore no complaints

with shipping its $5-$12 a foot here shippings rolls cost more than the material just like milk

with licensing its now like $24 a foot

yup almost $100/yd

making it more expensive than carbon fiber

I don’t think Gary Young became a rich man even with his lawyers and lawsuit against Bamboo Surfboards Australia over all those who violated his patentover the years on composite skinned surfboards especially wood skinned ones.

I wonder what people would say if Amorin the people that make the stuff got the patent instead?

Or maybe the factory in Portugal that actually produces all the stuff?

I don’t think the intention is to destroy the concept

but then my line of business invented the default swap bubble which crashed in 2008

catch a wave on anything

and if that don’t bring a smile to your face

go do something else

Hey Bernie,
I think you were confused. I told you $30/deck so for 6’ board thats $5/ foot plus I offered to include your cork. Thats like $3/ foot.

…I wonder if anyone has bothered to put a patent on using balsa as a surfboard material yet ?..(lol)

Stretch & lost in? Great, will probably be good for the non-corked board business too. And with stretch on board, Neil Pryde will surely be a pushover, right?

Or will the suits leave the gorilla alone and pick on some little guy?

that would be a karma killer wouldn’t it?

sorry Drew those weren’t your numbers

after we tlaked I had initially had in my head $1-$3/linear foot prior to shipping plus you get the benefit of the width

CP emailed me after you talked to him and I got a bit of cork which he gave to me along with a board I purchased from him for the swaylocks plaskett crew to test ride (because that’s the kind of guy he is and why he inspires me to do the same), those were the kind of numbers that were tossed around regarding the end product’s cost and value of what I was getting. Maybe it was inflated but CP seems to have a good handle on his costs to make things it could be he’s adding in other stuff needed to execute the material i don’t know.

I think just the shipping costs for a roll was well over $300 from the composites folks up North. Anything that gets flown here by air is almost not worth it once you factor in the transportation costs.

But CP is doing his darndest to find a way to make it work with possibly a local sponser(if anyone can help him with that) cause he loves using the stuff and believes in it. He just can’t price his work the same as Stretch or Matt in his market.

I think its all over blown

Gary Young had a patent for 10 years on the making of Composite Boards just like Jeff Alexander has a patent of that Gemini design as well as some guy who has a patent on hollow wood boards and I didn’t see that ruining or stopping anything that has happenned in that space up to now. Don’t believe surftech, firewire, or sunova or libtech paid one dime to Gary for his patent when they started and I don’t think it really mattered although he did have his own lawyers and did go after the Australia guy(Frank M) after the falling out of their business arrangement

like I said its like Marconi suing Edison or something…

Kind of like how the compsand guys ran off to form their own forum to keep their secrets only to have that blow up in their face. Or like how Grain blew up and Bert’s deal with Firewire blew up.

also many don’t realize that this whole process(the architecture, the code, the telecomm, the hardware it resides on that supports being online and posting all these complaints has been patented, trademarked and licensed by someone as well so everyone here is contributing to someone’s cost somewhere and in this case no one pays monthly fees here for the priviliage of using this “service” from Mr Paler we all seem to take for granted.

Imagine if we all had to write our opinions in a letter and put it in an envelope paying for the paper, envelope and postage just to let someone else know how we feel not with in shouting range.

Haha good point man. Yeah sucks there isnt an easier or cheaper way to get bulky material out to charlie. I could just deliver once the good souths start. Meet you at secrets; )

Are you sure or are you just assuming this?

I don’t think anyone can be happy about paying $30 more/board, be it a backyarder or someone with a big name.

CoreCork® is a 'Green' Solution for New Construction

CoreCork® is a natural, renewable resource that is now being applied to the composites industry. It's excellent fire, smoke and toxicity characteristics and natural sound insulation make it a great solution for wind turbine nacelles and marine, rail, automotive and light aircraft construction.

i see no where where the company even gives one fuck to the surfboard industry

**as to your garry young i remember those guys pissing around with bamboo  in the seventys **

but to be the first to put veener on surfboard  no fucking way   more bullshit

people have been doing all sorts of things  with surfboards  through the whole of my life and well before that

this i own it mentality crap needs flushing down the shitter

**haaaaaa’’ compsand   some ego tripping went on there
**

**cheers huie

so stretch and diverse dial in ther build with new materials , now they have to pay drew per board.

maybe drew should pay them for all the R&D they did . not to mention Validating it in serious conditions ( stretch –> Mavs / Hawaii )
