just saw a television ad for a rip curl edition ford ute. where does this end?
it only ends when everyone ignores them (and stops buying such products)… start today, and let this thread die too, lest someone read it and go buy one.
Silly things like that are just…silly. It’s a marketing strategy to get the consumer to associate a product with an image: “Oo-o-o, check it out; a surf vehicle”.
Ford also makes a Harley Davidson edition truck, and an Eddie Bauer edition SUV. The Image company and Ford agree on a few trim components and color schemes. Otherwise, there’s nothing special about them.
But take heart. This ain’t gonna kill surfing.

You see, that is why I refuse to drive Ford… ROFL!!
actually because I think Ford sucks…
Stop surf-corporatism! Drive a Fiat!
Hey all,
Stop watchin’ TV!
I’ve got a Tracks Mag subscription and there was a newspaper type mag (like the original TM) focussing on the Bells Pro starting from 35 years ago with a profile on the winner for each year up until last year…
Including the Rabbit “Vasoline” episode where someone put the stuff on his board before a heat…
It’s a great read and yes, it’s got a full centrefold of a new Ford Ute…
Tony Edwards even did some of the Goodvibes stuff…
This is a good case for corporate support…
I remember when Toyota came out with their Roxy car and Honda with its surf element. Same thing going . . . remember its two fold. They wouldn’t market unless there’s a market . . . so Keith’s right this one.
im in the jewellery trade and heard you cant get parts for expensive surf brand watches
buyer beware

Ha Ha Ha…Ha Ha Ha…Good one. Got to rush out and get mine before they all sell out.
The only thing that kills surfing for a person is the person himself. Kind of like being offended by certain post…if you don’t like it don’t read it.
Once your aware of hype, simply leave that company alone and spend your money with a different company until it also gets it’s own model car or etc. There is little difference between surf companies really and other than boards and related goods…none of them really have anything to do with going surfing.
Seawitch, with QS located in Avalon, you might be able to look out your window and see the first Quicksilver Edition ute driving by !
I have had a couple of Ford trucks that got me to and from Baja many a time. They are a good company. They may be going through some tough times right now, but they’ll pull through. The aura of the “surfing” brand is what gets me. You can go to Kansas and find kids wearing these logos on their cloths, even though they have never seen the ocean. I have never understood that. Why would you advertise for a company in that way? Some of these company’s don’t even make equipment for surfing, or any other so-called extreme sport. They are just clothing companies with nothing but a brand behind them. I’ll wear a shirt with a logo from a local surf shop, or even from a company that makes most of its money from selling surfing equipment. Rip Curl makes good equipment, but they are still mostly a clothing company. I don’t see any need to promote them on body or on my truck.
A friend of mine was a car salesman at a Honolulu Ford dealer, they had a “special” Hawaii package, very similar to the Eddy Bauer edition.
This was a $3,500.00 add on to the sticker price, special vinyl sticker graphics, suckers
Surfings hardcore will always exist but as there is presently a fashion for the surfing life style, (which is’nt necessarily a permanent situation), people who want to sell things will use it to that end. Owning a “surf” car or van, “surf” shorts etc does’nt make anyone a surfer but it does indulge peoples’ fantasy world where they are a surfer.
i’m hoping the current trend in yoga will pull some of the new surfers out of the water. it’s easier than surfing, costs less, and you won’t get eaten by a shark, hit on the head by a rock, or drowned by a yoga mat.
Yoga replace surfing? Obviously you don’t surf.
Some yoga can help with flexibility and balance, no question. But Gerry Lopez is a serious Yoga guy and he surfs ALOT.
Your statement reminds me of the Hindu proverb: “When a pickpocket walks down a busy street, all he sees is pockets.”
It seems that all you’re seeing is Yoga.

Doesnt exists in my world…shape n surf my own boards…can’t fit into any “surf” cloths cuz of my height…barely fit into a wetsuit …surf with small group of friends who all dont care about latest trends or the coolest …ahhhhh…whatever… My kids now…maybe.
“Dont believe the hype”
“Slave to what you read”
“Like cattle following the hay wagon”
i don’t understand your response.
why do you think i don’t surf?
i’m saying that i wish the current yoga trend would capture people from the surfing trend and unclog the line-ups a little bit.

Hahaha! nearly got run over by one on the way home from the surf this morn
I just think that we have the ability to fuel or starve corporate greed.
Voting with your dollar and being a concientous consumer are very important these days. Keeping small guys in business at the sake of a few bucks is okay with me. Paying a premium for stuff that lasts as well. I make everything else. (thanks again for the wax recipe Roy)
Nothing is killing surfing. Just because its more popular than ever right now doesnt mean its going to die. Maybe you can bum because what you do is now socially acceptable ( I know I stopped listening to alot of bands when I was growing up just because everyone else in the world saw how amazing they were to. Pretty silly now that I look back).
You control corporations, not the other way around. Make certain unacceptable actions intolerable. Dont like the state of the oil business? Ride a bike, its not as hard as you think. Bumming on popouts from china screwing local shapers? DONT BUY EM!!! (sorry for the yelling) You control corporations. Educate new surfers, and make them a better consuming consumer. (I can say that right?) Dont think softgood companies should be making a killing while the shaper (heart, blood, sweat and soul of surfing) scaps his whole life? Dont be a walking, talking billboard. I rock plain t’s and levis, support patagonia and rainbow.
You control the fate of “surfing”. and I was out for 5 hours today in solid head high surf… seemed like it was doing okay to me, not even a cough to be heard.
Nicely put.
