Costa Azul Resort

I am putting together a community surf trip together for the town that i live in and i am very interested in costa azul resort . they have sent me a brouchure ,but what i really want is some input or opinions from someone who has been there.I will be going in Feb. 2007. with about 50 people. If anyone has some first hand experience with the resort please share it with me.things like quality of the waves ,staff, temps. rooms ,food or anything of interest good or bad.I am hoping good.

Just got back from there last week. The waves directly out front are not good (mostly closeouts on the sand). You can walk a half mile down the beach and there are some better setups. Otherwise, you will have to drive to all of the spots, and in many cases, take boats from harbours. The amenities are comfortable but not luxurious. The food is very good. The staff friendly. If you are going with 50 surfers, you will be an instant crowd wherever you go. I imagine they will split you up in 5 groups of 10 and head in different directions (still an instant crowd). The resort has vans with daily surf trips going to an assortment of local spots anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours away. It would certainly be a fun choice to have the whole resort to you and your friends.

Thanks, luckly not all 50 people surf , on average15-20 people surf .it is a family trip so one thing that appealed to me was the other activities offered. Are they as good as look? And how does the surfing shuttle stack up ?

I was there 5 years ago in September with a non-surfing girlfriend. She was bored to tears.

We got some shoulder high for a couple of days - Punta Mita and a left point which I can’t remember the name of. The rest of the time was small or flat. They advertise the activities for non-surfers, but it’s not much really. I really can’t imagine 50 people descending on the place unless all they want to do is get drunk and swim in the pool in the 90 degree heat.

For a surf resort/trip it’s OK, but nothing to write home about. With that many people, I think you would be better off at a big hotel in Hawaii with access to shopping, restaurants and sight-seeing for everyone.

Nicko, enter your location / starting point.

If you’re in the east, Feb is about the most predictable time of year for waves in Puerto Rico. If west or central, for a group like that, you can’t beat Cabo San Lucas.

Good friends stayed there 4 years ago and found the surf pretty lousy, mostly shorebreak. Costa Azul was nice enough to refund their money and they moved closer to the better surf breaks down the coast.

I’ve been twice, in 1996 and 1997. Both were non surfing trips. Not a high end resort but both times our group had fun. There is snorkeling, sea kyaking and horse back riding among other things. Surfing is a day trip away from the resort.

The snorkle trip goes to one of three places in the world where the blue footed boobies nest. Cool birds. We’ve been to two of the three nesting sites. Some day I complete the treo in the Galapagos Islands.

have fun

Thanks for the reply, We are in the east. I looked in to PR but could not find anything near the surfing areas to handle 50 people. We have done the Barcelo in CR the last two years and have hit good waves and good weather. I was just looking for some place new. Thanks for the suggestions.
