Costa Rica Trip

I’m heading down to Costa from March 11-21. I want this to be a budget trip so I want to camp at Playa Naranjo. Any comments/suggestions on this? I don’t want to rent a car either, and I hear there’s a bus from Liberia to the entrance to the park. I’d appreciate input from anybody. I’m also willing to stay somewhere else if someone has suggestions. Also if I stay in the park at Playa Naranjo, is there any feasible way to get to Ollies? Thanks in advance for any advice. Oh yeah, I’m always looking for a traveling partner, so if anyone is interested in this jaunt then I’m down to have others to surf with.

You can camp there, but you better be prepared. I believe you must bring everything you need, including water. It might be tough to haul all your gear in without a car. The road should still be passable in March, usually doesn’t rain until May. I think it is almost impossible to get to Ollies without a boat. I have heard of boaters going for walks inland from the beach at Ollies and being turned back by park rangers. The best part about camping at Witchs is that the boats don’t show up until 8 AM at the earliest. And they leave by 3:30 or so. Have a great trip!

I had the good fortune to be able to camp there this past December, we drove to the camp and that worked out pretty well; walking would probably take about half a day. If you see someone driving down try and bum a ride with them, it might work. Bring food and lots of water because there is none (that you want to drink) there. Biggest problem would be lugging your board down the trail but with a single short board you would be fine. You might be able to buy water off people who drove in and have extra but don’t count on that. There is plenty of wood around the campsite that you can use to make a fire in the grills there so you can cook up some food. If you have any more questions just ask.

Nick is right about the boats not showing up early and late, while camped there we were able to surf it alone for about an hour and then again in the morning.

and I don’t know about getting to Ollies from there, I wouldn’t count on being able to get there.
