Couple new ones i'm working on...

deck pinlines…on this shot you can see how close my box comes to the deck. I’d say maybe a 1/4in if i had to guess.

So i’m looking at fins now. I have a couple side fin variations i can try (side bites and standard templates), and if i were to surf it single, i’d probably to with a Greenough 4c or something similar, but what sort of fin should i try out for a 2+1 set up? Any suggestions are welcome. I definitely want to get on of these to try a somewhat conventional thruster set up…but do i get a 4.5 and/or something a bit bigger. I also thought it would be cool to try out a bonzer type fin or something similar maybe in the 6-7 range, then mess with my cant inserts…crap i just got a hard-on…and i’m at work…this is embarrassing.

Oh, but i don’t want to buy two brand new fins, just one. Let me ask this question. What would be the largest fin i would want to put in that thing with 4.5’’ sidefins? Side bites?

THANKS,

Andy

On the fin box thing… absolutely not a concern. I’ve taken fin boxes right down to deck glass on thin tails with no problems. White pigment weakens the resin slightly but is often used to minimize the appearance of the box on thin tails.

The leash loop will be fine.

Any weak spot to worry about is at the front of the box where the stringer gets routed out in nearly all single stringer box installations. Many single stringer boards I’ve checked have a stress crack running directly across the front of the fin box.

Think about where the stress is focused if you hit your center fin… a routed out single stringer is suddenly pretty thin right at the front of the box.

Double stringers, mini-stringer inserts and/or glassover patches help out in that area.

Off topic Biz, but that sure looks like nice country where you are working. Neat little boards as well. Keep Going.
