Craigs List Quad

I figure this is the place to come to for the answers I am looking for.

I have a limited budget and see buying a used board the most green option.

Currently, I have been riding a 6’0" Larry Mable Twinzer  for quite a few years and hope to continue to do so on small days.  But, its time for me to spice things up a bit.  I thought a quad would be a good board to transition on from the twinzer.

On Craigslist I have found a good deal for this area.  Its a 6’4" Russell Quad 20" wide and 2.5" thick.

Will this be too big of a board for me?  Before the twinzer I was ridng a 6’4" thruster.

Has anyone rode a Russell quad before?  The fin clusters seem to be close together and pretty far back towards the tail as compared to other quads I’ve been looked at, but the pictures could be distorted.  I am going to be looking at the board on Wednesday (5/5/2010).

To make this thread useful for the masses, what should one be looking for when buying a quad off the rack?

Thanks for all your help

Several schools of thought -

As “Uncle Ambrose” put it once, when I asked him how a certain board went, “Like most boards, you have to get use to it…”  I.e., buy the board, and you’ll probably figure it out.

Get one with boxes which allow for adjustment.

If you like you twinzer, you’ll probably find the quad to feel similar (I have not ridden a twinzer, but have friends who have, and say a edge fin quad is most similar.) - small fins in back.

fin placement is like asking people what god they believe in…

how tall are you?

how much do you weigh?

what kind of conditions is the board intended for?

what are the dims on your previous board (width x thickness)?

I personally like quads that are tightly coupled and out on the rail, but there are other ways!

I am 5’11" and 165 lbs.  My current board is 6’0"x 20"x 2 3/4 and is very fishy (single wing, swallow tail)).   I have not rode the thruster in years but was relatively tiny when speaking volume (6’4"x17.5x" 2.25")

I want the quad to be an all around board (beach and points waist to overhead).  The Twinzer will be ridden otherwise in weak swells, which are so very prevelent in New England.

The fins of the board I am intereseted in are as you described, tight and close to the rails.  I have seen other configurations online, which is why I put this thread up. I am most interested in speed and being able to put it on rail.

What is the best fin set-up?  4 same size fins, smaller one in front or smaller one in back.  The Twinzer has smaller ones up front, close together and close to the rail.  Should I make it the same as the Twinzer for transitional purposes?

Thanks for your input.
