crap take two

I must edit my question sorry Kazuma’s own line is $150.00 more than the others?

There are many factors that effect the retail price of a surfboard. Many shapers are represented by multiple labels. Sometimes they handshape the blanks, sometimes they’re scanned and cut on a machine - these are then hand finished by the “name shaper” of someone else. Machined boards cost less and are easier to mass produce. They are more consistent.

Glassing costs vary. Labor costs vary. Sometimes there ar licensing fees attached. Overhead varies. Profit margins vary. Shipping and handling costs vary. Retail price is also affected by who’s distributing the boards - direct from shaper of a middleman. Shops mark up boards based on what they can sell them for.

Shapers need to make a living like everyone else. Just because they have their name on a board doesn’t mean they control the cost to the consumer. If you knew what shapers get paid you’d cut them some slack. They are the ones who’ve created the tools that allow us to surf. While “lifestyle” companies are making bank selling us tee shirts and trunks, the shapers get flack for making boards too expensive.

I like deals just like anyone else, but I think we should all be willing to pay more for surfboards. We pay $60 for trunks that cost $3 to produce. What’s so hard about paying $600 for a board that costs $400 to make?

If you want it, buy it. If you see something you like better that’s cheaper, buy that. If you want to support your shaper, allow them to make a living.
