So after a year of using Swaylock’s I think I finally came up with something valuable to post.
I have created a method for making perfect rocker templates using adobe illustrator and then applying them to the wood for a stringer.
-
Get a copy of the CF blank catalogue in pdf form. You can find it at foam-ez for free.
-
Create an adobe illustrator document a little wider than the board that you want to make and about 12 inches tall.
-
Place the page of the blank that you want to match the rocker of into your document. Everything in the catalogue is to scale so trace the rocker provided with the pen tool.
-
Create a straight line the exact same length as your surfboard will be.
-
Scale the pen tooled rocker until it is the exact same length as the line (hold shift so it will be in proportion while you drag it.)
-
Place your rocker on top of your line so it just touches in the flat part on the bottom.
-
Set your 0 axis to start at the beginning of your line.
-
You now have a way to find exact measurements of certain points and it is all to scale. I did marks at the nose, the tail, 12",24" from nose and tail, and the spot where it goes flat and leaves flat.
To apply this to your stringer wood:
-
Make a perfectly straight line like the one in your illustrator document.
-
Draw a dot at each of the points that you decided on.
-
Nail a tack nail into each of your dots lightly so it just holds.
-
Using a 8’ ruler that i made out of 1/16" ply and was made perfectly straight on one side align it to touch all of the nails that you put in.
-
Draw the line that the ruler created.
-
Cut out and sand your rocker. It worked perfectly for me.
