PeteC - on pay day I’m buying a adjustable pp, and a wetsuit, and supplies; blanks, cloth and sum pbr’s, malt beverages! Ty for the tips Pete! I’ll try it out.
PeteC - I got a few cross cuts in man! But I did it in steps as I don’t have fly adjustment…it works perfectly! I just figured deepest at tail block…I did one v pass, but you’re right! It cuts more on the pull stroke…I kinda cheated and alternated sides…then finished w Bill’s method w steps also. Used lowest setting. I can’t believe how aesthetically pleasing it is to the eye! I’m happy about it. But I did have to surform my ridges, also used a hard block sanding procedure. Thanks MUCH.
Note: my blank had 1 1/2" tail rocker, and barely any curve…so I had to create a rocker break as you can see. Also, it’s not tail kick, but rather continuous rocker.
Bill - I did try that technique, and it worked well! THANKS AGAIN. I used a low setting and stagger cut …it cleaned it up. Did a little surform work, block sanding to blend…it’s f’ing sweet!
Here it is! It’s “roughed out”, but I’m going to even the tables out…fine tune it. Keep posted! Note: the bottom is on da foot side!
Folk’s - here’s my take on cross cutting: it’s best done at a relatively lowish cut setting, guy’s best done in your own ways - as the late --Terry Martin pointed to - PeteC. It’s safw/sane and sound technology (if done well). The other method -Bill T .Suggested is probably easier, and is similar to -say cut rocker in. Use whatever! - Jim PEACE!
Anyone else try cross cutting? I can’t tell you how fun it was! And geuss what!? I opted not to trim the stringer as I was just cutting low depth and slow…zero blow outs! That said, if I was planing at a quicker pace, and a deeper cut I would have trimmed the stringer…but being I was cutting so little I just went at it! Question: how would I use the fly adjustment whilst planing? Do I just plane tail area at rear, stop adjust fly to lower setting? Sorry for the confusion, but id like to know bcuz I’m going to buy a foam ez pp w fly adjustment setup asap.
I would like to mension, I tried to adjust the fly whilst pp w stock unit, but my planer just planed through…no go. Just tight fly probably? I really can’t wait to buy the right pp!
Shapa,
Be carefull. It looks kinda like you put a straight spot where there was a curve.
It happens very fast.
Those planers, especially without the on the fly adjustment will put a big flat spot easily.
Makes the board look like it has reverse rocker.
Flip the tip a bit to correct.
Carry on.
thanks for pointing that out - Barry! I kinda sanded the tip area out a bit…it’s not as noticeable . I’ll have to be more careful. Thanks for the tip!
I cross cut. Skin blanks, take em to size and adjusting rocker. Cross cutting works best with a skil as the front shoe functions in a way that blends and doeant leave steps like other planers due. Petec stated this.
Watch terry senate or ben aipa shape a board. Cross cutting at its best. - both shape at a very fast pace. No blow out.
Run your planer at a very slight angle. And follow through. Its easy to take more off the side closest to you.
I have used the crosscutting method to add tail rocker, planer adjusted to a very shallow depth of cuts. But never really liked that method . Here’s a video that shows Glen Kennedy doing rail bands and adding nose and tale rocker. I think It’s a better method. Cutting with the contour lines of the shape and the grain of the stringer. Rather than, cutting across the grain of the stringer. It’s a promotional demo video for the Accurate planer. But still good to check out the method and technique. You don’t need an Accurate or Skil 100 planer to use these techniques. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FHPhcAxjMg
Thanks- WideAwake! I’ll try it. FYI - I’m about to pick up a wetsuit, supplies; blanks, fins, cloth, new pp, or whatever I think I need…just painting houses in the blistering heat! Lol.ill try the slight angle…what about the depth adjustment as im plowing off the foam? I tried to zero as I plowed upwards…but the flipping pp just mowed thru! then I just stopped, turned setting down…repeat…turn down to zero at the end…if I had the correct pp, would I just do a quik wrist turn to left on knob? That’s the thing I’m trying figure out. I’ll pick up a pp w fly adjustment… mine takes time. It still was real fun! Thank God I didn’t ruin my product!!!
I think you’re right about the slight angle. I do recall when I had a slight blow out, I recall I prob hit the stringer at a almost head on direction… last time I went at a kinda slower pace, but in and out…lucky I had absolutely NO blow outs. However, I did have a fair amount of reshaping the cut out areas w surform and block…not the end of the world. Fun, fun, fun!
Wavecraft - THANKS! I’ll take a look. Cross cutting if you go slow, and don’t cut too deep is safe man! Just try it, but don’t cut too deep…I probably should have cut shallow r…also, DON’T allow the pp to tilt! Keep her level as you cross cut…
Wavecraft - I watched the vid of - Glen Shaping, and I like his techniques he used to foil out the nose! Even though I don’t know how he is mowing foam off? It looks like he’s thinning out his nose foil? Once I grab the proper pp I would love to try this type of cutting -once I get acquainted w pp…nice vid!
