3 stringers verticle, 3 horizontal - waste of time ? interested to know what the gurus here think. has it been tried before ? i assume it has…
Howzit Sandy, Interesting idea, must be some logical reason it’s not been done before as far as I know. The horizontal stringers might make for weak spots that could cause breakage.Aloha,Kokua
I have never heard of a board split lengthwise. the horizontal stringers would really only and strength in that direction. Why add the weight where it doesn’t improve strength or performance?
not to sure about those stringers
but…
the shape looks good
Hi mate,
Couple of reasons why people won’t go there:
-
Have you ever seen a board break in a vertical direction? Not really a compelling need to add strength in that direction.
-
Shaping the rails would be hell with a stringer end grain on the rails.

this is a normal construction right? not a hollow wooden one?

My thoughts exactly. Not to mention you’d be hacking the horizontal stringers when you plane lengthwise.
yeah, taking a board and breaking it apart like that would lead to flex issues as well
the board would be stiff but flex in only certain spots
maybe reverse parabolic stringers??? ()<----- this is what we are working with right now )( <------- this is what could be next???
any input from the gurus???
I recall seeing a somewhat recent photo of Kelly Slater on Channel Islands with the reverse parabolic stringers )(. It may have been an advertisement, and I’m pretty sure it was in either the July or August issue of Surfer.
can you imagine the flex pattern on a board with a reverse parabolic stringer???
would be insane!
currently day dreaming of what it would be like to be a paid surfer
The flash movie on the right-hand side of the page shows Slater with a heat sensitive board and they definitely look like reverse parabolic stringers.
