curing time

I finally finished my first shortboard 7 days ago , and I know you are supposed to wait like 2 weeks before using it but im really itching to give it a surf . Could it really be that bad?

also , im going to shape some boards for my friends and i want to know what you guys think is a decent turn around time and price . I’ll have pictures up tommorow.

The only way to fix an itch like this is to scratch. Take out the new board and dig it! However, if the surf sucks, you might want to give it another week to cure…

As for turnaround time and price, it all depends on the patience and wealth of your friends. Given the word ‘grom’ in your handle, we can assume your friends aren’t in excess of either. They’re probably under 21, too, so the usual cost-of-materials-plus-beer might not apply. Maybe you could work out a trade…any of them have a cute sister?

Howzit Jersey, Some people start the clock when the board is totally done But I start it from the time the lamination is done. I really don’t know many people who wait even 1 week unless they have them made in the summer and wait for the north shores to start working.Aloha,Kokua

well , i took my board for its maiden voyage this morning , 3-4 foot clean with light offshore. It was a rocket! glass on fins are the way to go , the board launched me out of turns and held no matter what i did. It is my new favorite board for sure. I tried to post some pictures but i couldnt figure it out , maybe i could get some help there?

also , im doing a big fish for a friend in the 6’6 range and he wants removable fins. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me the easiest and cheapest system to use. I’m leaning towards futures , but i still dont know what kind of tools and everything is required. I told him i would charge him around 200 bucks for it , i think that is a good price?

check out fins from “rainbow fin company” they make some nice fins. or as I always preach… why don’t you try and make your own fins? custom fins always look and feel better in my opinion… but maybe its the epoxy going to my head and im actually wrong.

futures are great but if you do not have the jig to route in the boxs it can be kind od tricky as they require to depths to be cut (jig 190.00) with router. probox very affordable and the jigs cost 5 buckets and reusable. FCS fins fit the box and they sell keels. good luck

hmmmm , well , i have a router and lots of bits for it , would i be able to rig something up without the whole instalation kit??

Dude… Other Scott is right… go probox. that way you can use the broadest range of fins out there. FCS and probox fit… nothing better. also, FCS fins are good and not too expensive.

Have you considered lokbox?

Al Merrick and RFC have templates made for them. they sell around 40 bucks.

It was really for me to install the boxes with a dremel and a .25 routing bit. (really easy) it was my first time installing finboxes. Search the archives for instaling lokboxes there’s alot of info and you should also PM ‘Lokbox’ for instructions. he’s really cool.

FWIW, I have an old school fish that I made fins from marine ply but they’re just too heavy. I enjoyed the experience and all (foiling and having really cool fins) but I like my new Lokboxes for sure. I also heard that FCS might not hold up to the forces that a keel would create on the foam. But I have no experience whatsoever, just what I’ve read in the archives.

Also, I made an epoxy board recently and I was REALLY itching to surf it so after sanding with 600 I took it out without wax and without a leash plug/loop. it was great…so you should be fine.

thanks for all the help guys , but this kid im making this board for is really set on futures . I think im just going to experiment with some ways to do it , like possible make my own templates.

My first few boards had Futures boxes that I installed with an exacto knife, the cant came out pretty darn good too, just take yer time. I believe somewhere within the bowels of the Swaylocks archives there are instuctions on how to build a Futures jig, as well as lokbox.
