current projects .....

Okay , since a few people have asked me , I

  1. cut out a second set of fabric inlay fins for the quad setup in the bushfire fish

  2. roughly cut out the resin swirl bonzer runners

  3. reshaped , and am in the process of refoiling , the blue tinted fibreglass twin keels I posted shots of recently . [This is the inside [flat] edge]…

    So…

once I get a new grinder , and an extension cord , there will be MORE fins to try out for the “bushfire fish fin setups” thread …

cheers !

 ben

Hey Chip,

nice fins! What do you do to get your FCS tabs to the right width after cutting out the profile? Just grind em?

Not game to try a ‘wiggle’ yet?

" Not game to try a ‘wiggle’ yet? "

thanks for the challenge Greg , but … no , I’ll leave that for vlad the impaler .

Here’s what will be a "trailer fin’ *, for my “Bushfire Fish” …once I put in an extra F.C.S. plug behind the back finbox … five fin , “2+1” , thruster , “inline single fin” options , then !

[the greeny , “gnarly” looking stuff is merely masking tape , which will disappear , once this fin is cut out and foiled !]

  • It will be a “one tabber” fin .

cheers ,

ben

I just removed some double foiled keels from my 5-11 fish for single foiled keels for the same board (ply glass ons). I felt the double foils were hanging up if my foot was not exactly on the sweet spot. It will be interesting to see the difference. I have also been having fun on my 6-0 eps fish using lokbox Zippi Fish fins9single foil). Yesterday I replaced the Zippi’s with the Pavel keel haulers(double foil). The first wave didn’t feel quite right with the Haulers, but a few waves into it they started to feel good. A bit more drive, but not as loose. What most people report when comparing the difference between symetrical foils and single foils on their fishes. This is the first time I have tried this on the same board. I also have the CI curved keels to try. Fun, fun, fun. Mike

Good to hear you’re carving into that EPS, Mike.

RR?

Stringer?

Sorry…maybe all that’s a new thread.

Backlit [this one’s for YOU, “Cheater5” Chris ] …

Those keels are looking very good. I like the back lit photo.

thanks Ben !

I hope to try ‘em out later this week , in either the bushfire or the ol’ prawn fishes.

I wish ya had fcs in your boards , I’d like to send you some fins to play around with …

cheers ,

ben

Hi Benny 1,

The eps fish is from an eps blank from FH in Santa Cruz. Still have not cut into my chunk yet. I was eager to compare the ride of an eps fish with my other poly fishes so just grabbed a blank and built one. Definately kind of a corky feel to it which is not necessarily a bad thing for me. I built it a bit thinner than I would a poly, too. This means to me I can thin it out even more the next time. Especially the rails. The thing is way lighter than my poly fishes. I’m getting some deck compression which I dont like, but I know how to adjust for that next time. I like it enough to install a cord plug(ridden it cordless so far) and take it to some clean lined up point surf north of me and south of you when the swell dictates. Let’s try to meet up and suffer the crowds for the experiment. Oh, I use the FH epoxy because it’s easy to get and cheaper, I think. I want to try the RR, though. Have you used both and can compare? Mike

hey chip,

i thought you were taking a break? good to see that isn’t the case… those are some great looking keels. looks like a good foil too. i just tried foiling my first wooden set, and it wasn’t as easy as i thought. thanks for the stoke to try again.

rooster,

not wanting to hijack - but i found the same thing going from poly fishes to eps. i ended up adding more glass to get some weight. because they were so light, when they really got wound up on a longish wave, it would feel chattery on the chop. so i just added more glass, and that also cured any dents.now, i plan to keep on the eps, but going to go more dense as well(50kg/m3).

regards

" hey chip,

yeah , I only lasted a week ?!

…Going “cold turkey” didn’t work very well for me [my shutter and typing finger is just way too busy !] , so I figure that “cutting down” may be a better option . What a strange thing is this internet addiction ?!! …

“those are some great looking keels.”

thanks , mate !

“looks like a good foil too. i just tried foiling my first wooden set, and it wasn’t as easy as i thought.”

I’m still learning though . I find getting a good foil is my achilles heel .

“thanks for the stoke to try again.”

you’re welcome , mate !

…I am always stoked to hear my efforts have encouraged someone out there in cyberland to ‘give it a go !’ … whether it be fins , a stubbie flat bottomed single fin , multi-fin setups, or whatever !

cheers mate !

 ben

Nice fins chipfish! I espcecially like the blue check ones.

Hope you don’t mind, I posted them on 70!

" A stubbie flat bottom single fin ". Ah, sounds like a board i would enjoy, and if we ever get our 8 2 egg done, and knock up a mal, i think that’s the kind of board i’ll be looking at. And, thatnks to you ben, and also josh, i have some dimensions to work with. Love swaylocks!!!, you people are the best!!

P.S, a guy at work has a 6 2 single fin that he’s had for at least 25 years, and he doesnt ride anymore. Im sooo keen to ask him to borrow it, but he didn’t seem that keen when i told him i thought singles were cool, maybe he didn’t pick up. I’ll keep hinting around it and hope he offers it. Cross your fingers for me fella’s.

do you want to keep it ?

does he drink ?

…if you give him a [full] keg , that might decide the issue for him ?!

robrhyne …

thanks mate , I’m flattered !

I had completely forgotten about your site [even though I registered ] , so thanks for reminding me .

If I get it figured , maybe I can post the occassional piccie there , too, eh ? […between that , sways , and shaperoom.net , that is … I will SURF first , though ! posting threads and shots at night seems like a plan , maybe…]

cheers

ben

Chip, just keep putting good stuff up here. I’ll link to it from 70.

Since I am putting extra fcs plugs in Pascal’s thruster , may as well do my “bushy fish” , as well !
