I have a nice set of futures solid glass fins collecting dust. I am thinking of cutting the bases off and glassing them on my next board. Anyone ever done this? Will the fins end up too "thick" when one layer of cloth is applied to each side? Thanks!
Too thick? Nah. Most fins are too thin.
That extra thickness is invisible or even attractive to the the water moving diagonally across the bottom of your board. And don't be afraid to use 2 layers of 4-ounce. You might just want to make sure the trailing edges of your fins are sanded fairly sharp before you do so to prevent air bubbles where the glass comes together.
Wow. Font looks real big in the comment box. Interested to see where this all goes. . . clicking save.
SO VERY TRUE.
Go for it.
Just sand first.
two layers of 4oz. per side.
hey how about just rout two slots
and drop the tabs into glass and resin
slurry like the olt daze?and add a layer
or two to fin sides without big glass rope cove…
…ambrose…

post is toast
I kinda like The Ambrose method. Then again you could just buy a set of fin boxes.
Yeah, I'm with artz, probably easier to just route & install Future boxes.
Keep it versitile.
Easier than sanding fins.
ummmm…glass on fins are really cheap…sell the Futures…buy glass-ons…duh…
Thanks for the input. I've already decided I want glass ons. My main question really was with respect to the manufacture of glass ons. Are they made thinner to account for the fact that glass will be added over top, vs. a removable fin that will not have glass added. I was worried the performance would suffer if I change the dimensions of the fin.
There is also something to be said for using what you have on hand. I don't live in an area where many people are surfing, or buying fins, so would be a hassle to sell. After shipping and import duties, it will probably cost me more to buy the glass ons than I can get for the used fins.
Maine isn't too far away.
Shipping is a lot?
Fins are NOT hard to make.
maybe give that a try too?
