cut the tail and reshape to make a shorter board

Hi all!, I have a question,  I have a board made by a local  shaper, is like a rusty dwart 6’0 “X 21.25” X 2 8 / 7 " Ive been using the board for 6 months and I feel that the board its too big for me, my  weigh is 74kg (162 lbs)

It is possible to cut some inches to the tail and reshape and place the finboxes again to make the board shorter? like 5.8?

I dont know if its possible, I been reading about reshape, and seems to be a lot of work but I only want to modify the tail of the board.

I appreciate your opinions , thanks in advance

it is totally do able but i dont think you will get the desired effect out of the board

taking a few inches out of the tail is not that much foam but if you took a few inches out of the center of the board or thinned out the whole board that would be a noticeable difference

and you could only take out that much foam if your going to reshape the whole board

if you just want something alittle shorter you could go ahead and cut out some of the board but if there is just too much board under you and you want less float then i would just leave your board alone and order a new one the way you want it

My freinds got one of those, real fun board. That’s a pretty big Dwart for your size. Sell it and take the money, buy a blank and make a new one. If you’re just taking out it of the tail you’re not going to loose much foam unless you take down the thickness of the whole board. If you chop the tail it’s just going to mess with how the whole shape functions, moving those boxes are going to be a PITA too.

thanks for the replys guys!

Im going to add more info about it…

My problem is not the buoyancy of the board, actually I feel very comfortable with it, my problem is the foot placement, I feel the board very long, Its like I cant get the perfect place, WIth shorter boards I almost always keep my feet on the same spot, and with this board, some times I have to move forward or backward (sometimes the back foot, sometimes both) so Im asking about cut some inches to the tail to make it shorter, and maybe I will feel more comfortable with it.

I dont know if this issue dont have any sense!, Im just trying to look for a way to fix my problem without change my board.

thanks again!

terrible idea - trade or sell it to get what you want/need…butcher it, and it won’t be worth a thing…

have you played with your fin setup at all?  Changing size of fronts and back can make a significant difference in how a board handles.

No, the fins are Ok , What about only make a small change in the tail, converting it to swallow tail? Will I note any difference In the handling?

won’t change your rail length, rocker, or fin position.  Sounds like your fin cluster is to far back for you…moving and opening the fin cluster up can make a huge difference in how a board rides…especially for ‘front foot’ surfers…personally like my fins further up then typical…lets me drive from further up…measure your fins layout, compare it against another board you’ve ridden of similar length and like…might be the primary problem you’re having…

I really like moving around on my boards. Get forward and trim, step back and jam it. i'd be bored if i stood in the one spot.

Here is a picture of the fin placement,

You are going to screw up a perfectly good surfboard. Sell it or trade it for something of value.

Then go buy another one. If not you are just going to have an abortion that no one will want.

In all kindness, I say to you, GET OVER IT!    Learn to milk every ounce of performance out of the board, as it is.   It WILL make a better surfer out of you.    Don't waste your time and energy chopping up the board.   Perhaps play with fin sizes, but otherwise YOU should adjust to the board, not the other way around.    If you can't, sell it, and get a new board.

Questioneer, there is no such thing as a stupid question,

only stupid…fill in the blank!

Dont do it!

Probably get another board or move fin locations as it would be the least impact to the original rocker and relatively easy to do. I have reshaped many boards but I was intensionally making a shorter board and changing rocker for a kiteboard. I reshaped a couple of Stand-up boards that had snapped just forwad of the fin box from poor asian mfg. methods. They actually performed pretty well and were cheaper than blanks.
