I was chiseling out a finbox(i need to get a router) and i popped through the deck. It isn’t a major break, but it’s through the glass.
I’m thinking about filling it with qcell/milled fiber and then putting a glue on leash plug on the deck. The only thing that concerns me is that if you pull hard enough on the leash will it rip a big piece of glass off with it. This is only the laminating layer, i still need to hotcoat and sand before i would put on the leash plug. Will that be solid enough for a leash plug to be on?
That will fill right up when you set the fin box. Use some white pigment and a white fin box. Then drill a hole for a leash loop instead of going with the stick on leash loop. Where you poked through might just line up with the hole nicely.
That’s no biggie! Although you should have hotcoated the bottom before routing, so the resin that you install the box with doesn’t creep between the crossmesh of the glass fiber.
I used to route through the deck of my high performance boards on purpose, the tails were super thin and I could sand off some of the box that extended out the deck. After, a small lam over the offending section of box!
Howzit Cafka, Don’t use Q-sel in the mix since it has no strength. Use the milled fibers and some white pigment and put a layer of 6 oz in the bottom of the hole for strength. Put a piece of tape over the hole in the deck before installing the box and the mix will fill the hole. You can do a layer of glass on the deck over the box area also and then do the hotcoat. I’ve seen way worse ones where the hole is as big as 1/3 the length of the box and it was easily fixed. And like Jim says he used to route through the deck on purpose so you are not an idiot.Aloha,Kokua
Thanks guys. I’m going to do what Kokua said, but i’m going to drill out the hole and the box for my leash plug. At least this will teach me a new kind of plug.
