when doing a cutlap, after lamination and before cutting the lap line, when you turn the board over to make the cut wont the lam job on the bottom of the board dry to the racks or ruin the lam.when do you know to turn the board over or is there a way to do it without turning the board over. my glassin racks are hand made and do not move vertically.
Use waxed paper on your racks. Resin won’t stick to it.
and that wont mess up the lam job, thanx for the info
some people use baggies
I start with a fresh tape over the racks
You can throw a plastic grocery bag over your rack. It’s dirty for sure but I always seem to have plenty of them laying around. This technique is soon to die off because it will be against the law for grocers to supply the consumer with paper and plastic bags in the near future (you need to bring your own anyway).
O- but be aware that they have holes in them sometimes…that and the store’s logo will transfer to your board if it is touching it. Might be a good trick if you wanted to be sponsered by Vons…and want the logo to look like a mirror image of itself.
Use wax paper if you have it.

Depends on how wet your lam is? The trick to a good cut lap isn’t how fast you can flip & cut the lap. The trick is cutting it at the right time. Too wet it the glass tears and leaves a fat white line. Too late and you need a jackhammer to cut the lap. Just right it cuts smooth and clean.
So when you flip a board it should be beyond the point of where you get resin on your hands when you touch it, but before it is so hard it’s not sticky. Something like 30-45 minutes after lamination.
And may I add,
fresh sharp blades
when its right the cut will “zip” through the glass
Howzit HoppaBros, It’s OK to flip the board on the racks, the trick is don’t move the board around while cutting and just leave it on the racks till the resin finishes setting up. It’s when you try to reflip the board that you can pull the glass from the foam.Aloha,Kokua
thanx for all of the info, i was reading in the archives about doubling up the tape and then not cutting the glass at all and just sanding the lap off and they said it would make a good line and it is easy for beginners. is this a good technique, i also read in an archive in think kokua posted it about bending the blade of the razor and cutting sideways i was not sure what you meant by it. any info would help

Howzit HoppaBros, Never used the double tape but those that have are in the know so it must work. The bent razor blade cuts the lap so you don't have to sand the lap as much to get it down flush with the deck foam. Kind of hard to explain how to do it but you can figure it out>Aloha,Kokua
How the hell would you end a razor blade? They’re hardened steel and very brittle.
you place it on an open flame till it glows…then you just grab it and it bends itself!
Hi HoppaBros ,
I covered the rack with wax paper. Waited for the correct amount time to flip the board. Cut the lap with a new razor…
And then flipped the board back over…Whooops…I did not flip at the correct time, got resin on the racks and on my hands then I re-flipped or was that flipped out…
Great advise so far. Work smart. Be careful. Think about what your hands are touching. Change gloves if needed…

I use epoxy so no probs with a tacky lam job on the racks, still need to keep the board clean so put down fress tape, or use plastic bags or shrink wrap. With epoxy I wait till its the resin is tack free but not completely solid, to soon and its a complete mess.
Howzit kim, Grab both ends and bend, just becareful not to snap it. Very simple.Aloha,Kokua
Howzit stingway, Are you using pu resin? If so using wax paper the resin will melt the wax and leave sanding resin spots. Then you’ll have to sand them slightly to remove the wax before hotcoating. Wax paper over lam resin is an old trick to make a sandable surface for ding repairs. Another way is put the board on a wall rack, retape your racks with the sticky side down then flip the board and put it on the racks and cut the glass, less tendency for resin and glass to stick to the board and pull glass off. If you are using epoxy, never mind.Aloha,Kokua

Jedi Mind Tricks…bend razor…bend, endb, ndbe, dben.
