Deck glass accidently cut 4oz to apex (4oz under 6oz?)

I am new here and was a little exhausted from sanding the high spots from my bottom lamination and accidentally put the 4oz glass down and cut it to the apex instead of the 6oz. Before I continue I wasnt able to find any posts on putting the lighter glass under the 6oz so I wanted to ask if thats doable and what concerns there may be?

Is it better to wait until monday to get another couple yards of 4oz glass and get the 6oz under the 4oz?

Cheers!

J

Nothing wrong with 4 under 6. But also nothing wrong with putting the lapped 6 down first and the 4 oz that is cut to the Apex on top.

Lapping the 6 Oz is fine. Gives you a nice strong board….6×4×6 was a standard lay up when i started making boards…now 4×4×4 or even less…just cannot put anything heavier in shops. To many under arm shakers ..take it out in top to bottom barrels broken easily

Yeah I have got three 4x4-4 Channel Island boards sitting in my shop right now. None of them older than one year and snapped completely in half.

I went ahead and put The 4 under the 6. Had the resin start to kick before I could finish but got it as best I could.

Then I started cleaning up the lams and burned through a little on the bottom of the nose!!??

Air bubbles around future fin boxes in a few spots like this???

Little filler coat on rough areas…sand… can dremel or cut out little box bubbles ,then a little rub with styrene…lam lap and edge bead ..hotcoat

@Jeff2 EPS or PU blank? Epoxy or PE resin?

Just knock those spots down a little with a sanding block or die grinder and put a piece of glass over them. Cutting them out may make them more noticeable and harder to repair. If loose glass is sticking up razor cut it. Hit with the grinder and put cloth over. Cut your MEK back by 4 or 5 cc next time and work faster. You did alright. The 4oz or 6oz problem really wasn’t a problem. Some guys put their lams/logos between layers for clarity of graphics. With today’s quality cloth; I don’t think that is necessary.

You always want the tighter weave 4oz glass on the bottom and the more open weave 6oz glass on top if you are laminating two layers of cloth at once. Much easier to wet out that way.

Use a “cheater coat” next time. And; Sometimes you can finger rub lam resin into spots like that if you see them soon enough.

Epoxy and Epoxy Resin. Heading to the shop this afternoon to grab some Addative F he recommended but not sure what thats for or how much to put in the hot coat.

The center fin is pretty bad. Long bubbles down almost 80% of one side and about 80% of the length of the other side as well on the tops of both sides of the box!!! My lighting was bad and the resin kicked before I cound even finish the second rail.

I had 4oz fin box patches, 4 oz under 6oz on top of that.

Ding repair. Not much you can do with Epoxy except go to Slow Hardner next time. In the future work out a plan of attack and stick to it.

I greatly appreciate everything each and everyone of you has said and working hard to do my best on this one.

Incidently, I got to the beach yesterday and my center fin adapter on my long box had cracked apparently and I guess I lost my center fin somewhere. Well its an hour to the beach and an hour back plus the cabs so I rode the 7’4 with just 2 large side fins and wow she really took off. A bit had to get up at first but she really started to turn. I have been thinking about trying to do a fish shape and I may even grab another blank to start a fish later this week. I would grab one today but my friend keeps saying I need to try a PU. Both PU and EPS blanks are available at the shop.

I believe they have 2 types of hardner here. So just glass and resin for something like this were no foam is damaged I am assuming. Thank you very much have a great day!

I forgot to ask if I should go ahead and sand down the leash plug and the fin boxes before I do this or when do do that? They are still taped up from prep.

I got marker on my fin patches, under 4 and 6. Can I Drexel tiny bits out? Can it be fixed any other way without a bigger Hassel? If it’s a big deal I’ll leave it or maybe paint black over them later.

Here’s the bubbles on the first 2. This is back to flat on the deck. Do I need to go deeper? Do t want to damage the boxes. Is that enough grinding?
