I am in the final stages of building my longboard and have a question:
I am using a leash loop instead of a plug. Should I place a deck patch around the cured leash loop for extra strength/support? Also, can someone describe or post a pic of what the fiberglass deck patch should look like before installation?
I have read that the deck patch should be “v-shaped”, bottom of the v towards the tail with the top part of the v no further than 24" up from the tail and it should wrap slightly on the rails.
Thanks
John
A leash loop should be covered with some cloth to help form the loop. The loop is strong enough as long as you don’t sand all the cloth away. Treat it like a glass on fin. A deck patch is usually done under the the top layers of cloth first. You can shape the patch anyway you would like as long as it’s not straight.
Good luck

fold the uncut patch in half at the stringer, so your “v” shape of arc shape cuts are symmetrical…not necessary, but it helps things look good. vee or arc shaped cuts are to prevent a point of the board where it’ll be likely to break. don’t wrap at the rails…cut dry cloth at the rail apex like you would with the bottom layer of cloth on the deck. If you’ve seen a tinted longboard with a deck patch…that is exactly what it looks like when it is dry cut cloth(you asked for pics, but there is a visual that may help). put the patch where you knee paddle…which will probably be 24" or more up from the tail like you stated in the original post. good luck and I hope this helps you.
