Storm Riders: Nias Section
Adventures in Paradise: Nias Section
Indo Express: Nias section.
Josh – hey i can dig that sort of thing. good call! ( i got storm riders already too) I’m jonesing to see the guys riding NIAS on twins!
Instead of a longboard, how about that glued together monster that you & Thrailkill came up with? Like ‘SFY’ but a bit more ‘eclectic’ and exciting. I’d especially like to see the horror of the Malibu stylers when someone cranks that thing into a nice slidey bottom turn.
Despite bias, I think ‘Litmus’ deserves a vote too- it’s a great little film with Hynd riding the quiver, Joel Fitz going off and of course Lynch. Kidman really opened the path for Campbell, Malloys etc with this film too, although ‘Morning’ was the inspiration for Litmus so really it’s all about Alby .
I’m with Chip on the ‘Surfing For Life’ doco too, it’s a great and inspiring film with some wonderful footage, and in the same vein ‘Heart Of The Sea’, which is a Rell Sunn bio, is pretty impressive too. I watched Steve Cooney’s ‘Ulu 32’ not so long ago and it’s good for sheer quantity of dream waves. If the swell doesn’t happen soon I’ll probably have a few more movies to add to the list!
the 5 fin mutant? That board is freely available to anyone who wants to pick it up and set it on its way! How about this, if nobody wants it in the next month, I’ll just take it up to Windansea (in honor Bill T) and toss it in the Pacific on the next big swell with a note on it to “post on www.swaylocks.com when you find this…”
(((((((((((((((((((FastTimes @ Ridgemont High))))))))))))))))))))))))) features surfers…Jeff Spicoli,Stoner Bud,and Stu.
before that it was…“Giget”,“Beach Blanket Bingo”,“Muscle Beach”,“Hotrods to Hell”,
THEN of course the pinnacle of surf movies…“Point Break”.Features surfers Bodi,WarChild,Bunker,Lori Petty, and spical agent Johnny Utah from Ohio/st.Buckeyes…or is that??? “Surf Nazis Must Die !!!”
Keith,
I had no idea you had such a cruel streak! FrankenBoard should be allowed to live. Google up Bill Andrews at
A Day With BA. Offer him the opportunity to “TEST” the board at Windansea. I think he’ll make the board famous. (infamous) Maybe all the board needs is more fins. I can help. I have many fins, and many boxes. Who knows, we may be able to surpass Chip!!..or not.
lol
It’d be worth a trip down south to get that fine surfcraft- explaining it to she-who-must-be-obeyed could be trickier though… ‘No honey, it’s not mine, it’s a loaner and it’s meant to look like that. Nice Mr. Thrailkill has some more fins for it too…’
Cruel, Bill, CRUEL?? Have you forgotten what this board looks like? If you love something, set it free. (Then hunt it down and shoot it, Herb!)
Okay Keith, lol, but what does it ride like?
Herb - better than I would have guessed. Actually, my guess was that it would snap back into its original 2 halves on the first duck dive or wipeout. Surprising lt did not.
The most noticable thing is, you can sink the tail real easy… as long as you don’t do that and stall it out completely, it surfs pretty good…
Ha, maybe I’ll go surf it right now. Tide’s falling…
hey is that a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale sitting on top of that blank getting it’s rocker cut out?!
Yep, that’s Sierra Nevada.
Well I just went out and rode the frankenboard/mutant, but I tweaked the fin placement first… dang that thing works WAY better than I remembered. (probably helps to have the fins in the right place, DUH…)
SEE !..It wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

I once mentioned “SNMD” (a Troma classic, by the way) to my bodysurfing brother-in-law. He and his fairly new wife, who was from the Chicago suburbs, both in or recently granduated from a PHD program, apparently took turns choosing videos to watch every week. She would pick art house films, he would pick sci fi classics…until the week he rented “Surf Nazis Must Die”. I believe I had told him it was a funny take on the beach life; he seemed to have enjoyed it. He didn’t get to choose again for, well, years probably.
“Point Break” had the naked chick with tatoos firing an automatic weapon…even that wasn’t enough “bang for the buck”. “The Big Lebowski” is a better “surf flick” in my book.
So how would you guys classify “The Far Shore” in definitive surf movies by era? The 1970’s, when much of the action took place, or this decade when it was released? I suspect a case could be made either way. Maybe the best movie of its kind since Endless Summer, certainly top 5/10 all-time. Not surf porn…art…
Where’s Wardo??? is my,“last surf film on earth” video…bout the only one I watch.
once and a long while,I watch ,“Quality time w/ Jason Collins”,Jeff Neu’s Surf Addicts. …and Rusty’s C-5 Challenge…all classic futures.
SNMD…PRETTY BAD!!!
They filmed the jetski battle out in my favorite Rivermouth one day…They told us to get out of the water…Kay?..no hablas english, gringo…what a joke…they couldn’t even get us out of the surf break to shoot there crappy movie.
Geez…you mean they didn’t even film it in New Jersey? That’s pretty low, even for Troma. Toxic Avenger was better anyway…three thumbs up!
I suppose there could be a sub-catagory of the formerly ubiquitous “raunchy teenage sex comedies” of the 70’s…many set on the beach…“California Dreamin’” being perhaps the epitome, Johnny Fain a co-star, filmed by a Hollywood guy who said in interviews “my idea of hell is sitting on the beach”.
And to hell with it - if we include Hollywood films at all we should acknowledge “Lifeguard” as being up there with “Big Wednesday” as far as quality and soul. I don’t know what happened once the 80’s started - maybe just $$$$ - but it took Bruce Brown and family to make anything after that on the fringes of “the entertainment industry” that didn’t make me cringe in horror to one degree or another.
Speaking of eras, and the 70’s, there were a few good representative Super-8 films shown in in local areas. Allan Main did “The Silver Sea” in the Ventura area, I remember a Jim Clark from Ventura/SB area made one or two…I saw some local Oregon footage with a regular showing of “Sea of Joy” in that era up there…little moving slices of time and space…maybe not definitive but together they become something of a legacy.
Oh man, now I really want to borrow it! How come no one has mentioned ‘In God’s Hands’ (I think that was it) as far as Hollywood surf films go? I haven’t seen it, but it can’t be worse than Point Break and it does have Buff in it, so some Hollywood money made it’s way to the Westside which is good. Chipfish reminded me that there’s an upcoming Ben Stiller big wave comedy in the works- maybe all the Blue Crush generation will flock to Mavericks now.
