my board has a delam on the deck and needs to be vacuum bagged, etc. the guy doing the repair suggested a deck patch, too, and i’ve read on old posts that many of you recommend one. i understand the reasons for it and everything, but i’m a little worried about how much weight it’s going to add. the original glass job was 2 x 6 oz on top and 2 x 4 oz on bottom, so it’s already fairly heavy for a HP longboard. is the deck patch going to make that much of a difference, or am i worrying about weight for no reason? any advice would be appreciated.
If the delam is in the back, where you knee or stand, weight is not much of a factor, maybe 6oz between your feet.
6oz on the nose is not good for snappy turns.
thanks. the delam is in the back, mostly from my right knee when i paddle along with the usual heel pressure. the repair guy wants to put a patch up to about the midpoint.
Ahmmm- the weight of a ( roughly ) 24" x 36" deck patch is gonna be measured in ounces, which isn’t gonna be noticable. Which wetsuit you are wearing that day or what you had for lunch will make more difference than that. Let alone how much wax you have on said deck.
The industry has sold a lot of people on saving weight at any cost. Which tends to jack up their sales but doesn’t work to the advantage of 99% of their customers…realisticly, less than 10% more weight ( a 12 lb board vs an 11 lb board) due to heavier blank and heavier glassing will double the lifespan of a board, all other things being equal.
hope that’s of use
doc…
cool, thanks. i appreciate it. i’ll go with the patch so i hopefully don’t have to deal with a delam again.
