Detail Spray Gun - Buying Help

I’m looking to upgrade my current, inexpensive detail gun and was hoping for some feedback. I’ve been looking at entry level Accuspray or Sharpe models (75.00 to 100+). IWATA and Sata are probably priced more than I want to spend (150. to 200+).

I see there are also different tips sizes to consider - most seem to come wih 1.0 standard, but I would like to hear more on that too.

Thanks,

Herb

Howzit Herb, Different sprayers for different applications, what size areas are you interested in spraying. Fiberglass Hi. carries a bunch of sprayers that will cover almost all applications. They have some nice HVLP Astra brand gravity feed sprayers for decent prices but they come with different size nozzles and you need to tell them which one you want or tell them what you are going to use it for and they can help you pick the right one. I am getting reedy to buy one with a nozzle a little larger than 1.0 which can be used for doing solid color boards or smaller detail spraying. I think they cost about $100.00 but they are worth it. Herb, When you think about it, a lot of the technology and tools used for surfboards come from the boatbuilding and automotive industries. With that in mind, I go to the suppliers that supply auto paint and body shops when I want to get really good wet or dry sandpaper (the good stuff will sand WAY better than the garden variety you get at Home Depot), or spray guns.

I have an inexpensive touch-up gun, about $40.00, that works great for small fades, and smaller areas. I dug deeper for the 1 quart gun I use for large areas like the entire bottom of a board. The brand on that one is Finish Line and it’s made in England. It’s a High Volume Low Pressure, gravity feed gun and cost about $130.00, but it does an amazing job. It’s great to stand back and look at a clean, even color over the entire board, and it was easy to do.

Experiment with air pressure for whatever gun(s) you buy. It can make the difference between an adequate job and a great job. Good luck and have fun! Doug

Like Doug says check the automotive supply places. Look in the phone book under Auto Body Supply. Call aroud because the prices will vary quit a bit.
