DEWALT Dewalt Sander, anyone have one? DWP849X 7-Inch/9-Inch Variable Speed Polisher with Soft Start

they are on sale at Amazon. Seems like a good buy at about $180. anyone have a thought? thx

Hi Greg,

Very good tool.  In fact, we plan to get another one when it is time to get more.  Story: When

we had the DeWalt sander, my sanding guy at the time (not too bright,) left the machine

plugged in overnight.  (House rule, last man out, unplugs all tools, shuts off compressor,

oven etc.)  He just turned down the variable speed to “0” and laid it “Disc Up” on the tool

rest.  Over the next two days the plugged-in machine spun up, maybe vibrated, adjusting

the speed setting and the sander fell to the floor, drove across to the opposite wall, then

progressed over time down the full length of the wall (chopping the drywall up) before

hitting the corner, where it caught fire, and burned up the side of the wall to the ceiling.

The Sander Gods were smiling down on my shop because the structure did not catch

afire, but the DeWalt melted, and died.

I know, not inspiring to get the tool Greg, but it did a good 150+ boards before that

happened, and the trigger is different than the Milwaukee, never clogged.  Plus the

spin-up delay did not seem as “delayed” as the Makita or Hitachi sanders.

Have fun,

George

Wow, easy as that.

You were lucky for the fire not to spread.

I regularly turn my sander to sit idle, not any more though.

I can just imagine it bouncing around the room. scary

wow, I’d like to laugh, but that could have been tragic.  thx tho for the info.  I’ve had really good luck with DeWalt tools.

Thanks to Acqua Glassing and George Gall for the recomendation.  Took a while, but I finally pulled the trigger.  What a great tool.

Ya, know?  with Abranet and this DeWalt, sanding out boards ain’t so bad.  I might even enjoy it.

Sanders (guys who sand) don’t get enough credit.

I’ve used the DeWalt sander, for about ten years.      The variable speed feature is really nice.     I still like to use my single speed Skil, and feather the trigger.    One of those skills from the past.   Something to bear in mind, that few people grasp, is that sanding a surfboard is the final step in the shaping process.     That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.

I have the Dewalt sander. A piece of the commutator broke off, making it worthless. Out of warranty.

if anone can use it as a parts piece, it’s yours.  Trigger and speed controller and everything else are like new.
