So I have shaped my first blank. 9’6" from 1.5# eps. To this point things have gone pretty well. I have cut holes for a 2+1 setup with lok box sides and a 10.5" center. Unfortunately I foiled the tail too thin. In order to get the center box in I had to move it up to 7.5" from the tail and the sides up to 19". Is this going to be a problem? Or should I just have a beer stick’em in and get to glassing (when ever my epoxy gets here)? BTW this shaping thing is just too much fun!
Pretty common…I think when most of us started shaping, we just loved going to town on the foam…a too-thin tail is almost a cliche
You can:
Cut 2" off the end of the tail & have a nice 9’4"
Refill the hole & glass on the center
Search for some fins Platty made that overhang the rear of the box
Move the sides back & make it a cluster/widowmaker setup like a Parmenter or an Infinity
Before glassing, you could have just added a 1" thick styro sheet to the deck or the bottom.
Here are those fins Benny is talking about.platty.
Really cool fins. All look like solid designs from over the years.
With a screw at the front, how do you shift the fins back past the rear of the fin box w/o damage to the board?
The base of the fin behind the pin is cut so it is clear of the board by about 1/8 inch. See photo. This fin can move another 1.5 to 2 inches further back.
Thanks guys. Not sure which direction I’m going to take yet, though the 2" off the tail sounds simple enough. That would take some of the rocker out of the tail but I ended up having a little too much nose rocker for a nose rider anyway and the concave didn’t help. As if I knew what the hell I was doing in the first place
Platty: that is a really cool idea for fins.
Later. Eric
I agree… just shorten the board, then pull in the tail to bring it back to what you want. 2" shorter won’t be significant compared to a fin that’s 2" too far forward.
