Im going to shape myself a Wizard sleeve. I normaly ride 6’1, 18 1/2, 2 1/4. What do you think these dimensions would transfer into a wizard sleeve board. I was thinking about 5’4, 19 1/2, 2 5/16. Baring in mind the board is going to have a wide nose and minimal rocker, and keep a lot of thickness in the foil, Do you guys think these dimensions sound right?
sounds right to me…wheres ur widepoint going to be? seems like ci puts it forward like 3" or something. hard to tell without having one to see.
At 19.5" it will be too fat at that length. 19" is the correct width
for a 5’4". If you need more volume, add an inch or two to length.
Also move the volume under the chest and run the foil out to the
nose. These boards are a matter of balance between a step-up
tail (13.5 - 13.8" ) and a wide nose. Wide point should be in the
middle or a little bit up. They need a good wave to work right. If
not, a tangent is a better model to work off of. Hope this helps!
Is this board the modeled after the one Slater rode at Pipe or at Snapper’s? If it is the pipe board, I would not ride it unless you are planning on hucking yourself into some pits, that board didn’t look like it belonged anywhere except the barrel. The snapper board looked like a dog, and in my opinion cost him the heat to Julian Wilson.
Its similar to both of them, but The board kelly rode at pipe was a 5’11, and kelly was riding a 5’3 at snappers. I think the 5’3 is too short personally, it doesnt hold enough rail and it keeps getting caught on the lip. I think I’m gong with a 5’6 now I think, by 19 1/8 by 2 1/4. I want a bit of rail in there too. Thanks for all the input everyone. I was thinking about the wide point being a good 5" above centre. Normally I put my widepoint on single fins at 9" above centre but for a board like this, I think you need quite a lot of volume under the chest, But i dont want it turning in to a biscuit, with too much volume in the bottom 3rd of the board.
wow, thats along forward for the wide point, if you are trying for a KS style wizard sleeve, I think you'd be looking at 1-2" in front of centre from pics I have seen. I'm interested in doing one soon too, but my version, and yeah, I think the 5'3" is too small, reckon 5'6- 5'8" is better for wider range of waves....keen to see pics of shape when you get it started....
just a word to the wise
head high is the right length

What I think I’m actually going to do is change the shape a lot. When I look at the ones for sale on surfride I was pretty disapointed because in my opinion they are too egg shaped. The nose seems to round if you know what i mean. I a considering making a deep 6 template on AKU just for the outline, and then changing the dimensions to 5’6 by 19 1/8 by 2 1/4. This is because i think it will end up having a nicer nose - I dont like really round noses on boards. Im a very front footed surfer so i think That if Im going to have a less rounded nose, the wide point should be quite a bit further forward, Maybe not 5" but definitely not the 1 - 2" as in the current wizard sleeves for sale. Also - $780 for a 5’6 PU board - What a rip off.
The wide point is actually bang on centre, and all the volume is kept right to the rail.
as i recall, slater said that these boards were basically the back half of his normal boards with the front portion rearranged to get the same volume into a shorter area. just one more thing to keep in mind,
