measure from the depth of her armpit to 1-1/2" to 2-
1/2" up from her fingertips to get the comfortalbe width… 7’ to 7’-6" is a good length. don’t make it to thick I’d say no thicker than 2-5/8" don’t go big on the rocker. use a blank made of eggs.
good luck man!
My wife rides longboards but wanted to downsize for something a little more fun in beachbreaks. She’s not into the squirrely short board feel and asked if I coul make her a mini-log. Here are the dimensions: 7’6" X 18" X 21.5" X 15" X 23/4" thick. Tail Rocker 2" Nose 4.5" Wide point 4" forward of center. 4" square tail. She’s painting it now, I’ll post when it’s done.

Learning to surf is about catching lots of waves. Whether you’re in the face of the wave or in the whitewater isn’t too improtant at first. Getting enough paddle speed to get into the wave fairly easily can accelerate the learning curve greatly. Surfing lots of small waves will do the same thing.
Trying to catch small waves on a 7’6" can be very frustrating for a beginner. Something between 8’4" and 9’4" would make a lot of sense IMHO.
If they are available start by renting a few boards and then you have a much better idea of what to shape.

well she is more of an intermediate surfer then a beginer, she has been surfing for a while but the board she has i think is a little to wide and thats why she has been at this ability for a while. once she stands up she is good but its just catching the waves where the problem is. i think i mihgt go a little biger then 7’6 but not by a whole lot.
so should i go a little thicker and narrower. well within reason.
my girls have tried several boards and like a fun gun (dumb gun? speed egg?) about the best. about 8’ long and 20" wide… Since they usually ride beach break, some rocker can reduce pearling, pointy nose reduces volume and makes it easier to bring out, and 20" width lets them carry it – well waxed they can tuck it up in their armpit even if their fingers dont wrap all around.
i know a girl who has a sick little 8’ mini-log. about 21" wide and 2.5" thick. plenty narrow for her to get her arms deep in the water but still plenty long to paddle well.
anybody got any pics of boards like these or some exact dimensions. i have goten a lot of good ideas today. thanks for all the help
Im looking to get my wife a mini log and Im thinking about buying this particular one. Its 7’6x21x17x14.5x3. She is an intermidiate, 5’10 130lbs, and will be surfing a beach break. The 3 inches thick bothers me what do you think. Many thanks.

The thickness is subjective. Your wife is an intermediate surfer but what type of surfer? Does she ride shortboards, funshapes or longboards? 3" to a shortboarder of her size would seem awfully thick. If she she’s used to longboards or even funshapes it would seem fairly normal. You also have to take into consideration the shape of the deck and rails. Does the thickness carry out to the rails or does it drop to a lower rail that can bite in on turns?
My wife is about the same weight ( although a little shorter), and a longboarder that enjoys riding funshapes so a 3" deck with lower rails feels just fine to her on a 7’.5" -8’ board. On the other hand, a girlfriend of ours strictly rides shortboards and has hard time turning an 8’ funshape. I guess it comes down to what she’s most comfortable with.
For what it’s worth.
