Ding or Problem in lam/hotcoat?

Hey guys,

Built a shortie for a friend.
He rode it for 45mins, didnt hit anything and doesn t remember hitting the board with an elbow or knee.

He sent me this pic of the “ding”, which to me appears like a crack in the hotcoat. The line below the crack is just the cutlap. What do you think? Did something hit the board or could it be something that went wrong in the hotcoat or worse, the lam?

Thank you!

…I do not know if he hit or did not but those spider cracks are due to too much resin in the area; normally besides the laps (due to cheater coats there etc)

Thanks Reverb,

I gues the next steps are to sand down to the weaves with some 100 grits, then re-apply some hotcoat while making sure I don’t lay it down too thick?

friend?

I spent countless hours shaping this board and you complained that the color was not right…after glassing you found normal marks from the cut lap process and complained…Today after 45 min of surfing you find some small stress cracks in the gloss coat…Fuck you “friend”. Enclosed is a full refund. Give me the board back… Take your money back, give me the board… I’m done with you…

I’ve been down this road. Its not easy. Do not fix this board. full refund, walk away. never build a board for this person in the future.

Full refund…walk away… be done with this

“Full refund…walk away… be done with this”

Sometimes this is the best approach to a difficult ‘friend.’

Only one thing causes cracks in the resin, impact. This board got thumped by something. Could be a knee, elbow, heel, whatever.

What part of the board is this? Can’t tell by the pic, except that it’s near a rail.

Thanks Guys,

Not gonna walk away, my buddy never really said it was becasue of me or whatever, he just sent me the pic and asked me what to do about it, so I am not going to tell him to fuck off… If it is due to too much resin, then I have to suck it up, take the board and repair it, end of story. Now, I will see when I get the board, if there is clearly an impact, I’ll tell my friend to give some cash to repair it, easy, no stress ;).

Sammy A, it is the just on the top of the swallow tail area, generally where I put a little more Hotcoat resin so i don;t sand through… which could explain the crack. Bu ta stress crack in this area seems a little weird to be, I mean my buddy is a big guy, but I don’t expect the board to flex in this area…

Anyway, I will let you guy sknow when I get my hands on the board !

It could have been caused by something as simple as a leash knot or rail saver device.  Maybe from being stacked on a roof rack?Normal wear and tear for standard glass job.

I hope you don’t take offense at the comments about your friend, they were made with your interests in mind and probably based on real world experiences with a certain type of “buddy”.

I didn’t comment, but I have been there so I know it happens. It’s nice of you to look after the board for your friend, but the bottom line is, it’s his board now and his responsibility to deal with the upkeep.  If he wants to pay you for it that’s cool, but a lot of guys seem to think warranty is implied in purchasing from a friend, and it isn’t.  Once you paddle a board out into the big blue ocean, anything can happen, from spiderweb cracks to snapping in two. Just sayin’.

Hahah I didn’t take any offense no worries, I just wanted to make it clear that my buddy wasn’t being an asshole about it, he never pointed fingers at me, he was just asking if and how he could repair it, and then I started to wonder how it happened.
