two weeks ago we went to spain for some summer surf, and just as you would expect the airline dinged my board! nothing bad, but bad enough that it needs fixing…
the problem ist I didn’t check the board before the first trip to the beach and when I got there and saw the dings I didn’t have anythng to fix it, so I rubbed wax on it and went surfing. now, back at home, I want to fix it but don’t really know how to treat the wax I rubbed into the cracks? dumb idea? sand it of and go? any tips are much appreciated…
Wax in a ding? Bad idea. Any wax that isn’t removed will prevent resin from sticking when you finally get around to fixing it. When travelling and trying to pack light, ding repair items are not always a choice. Best bet is a roll of mylar tape. You can even use stickers to cover open dings. Wax is the worst possible choice, with duct tape being nearly as bad.
You will have to cut or grind out ALL of the wax. If just a tiny bit is left the ding will probably suck water after you repair it. Good luck.
Agree with Sammy, except on the duct tape - I have used duct tape many times for temporary ding protection. Just clean the area good first, and make sure the tape has a good seal all the way around. Being a contractor I usually always have a roll of good quality duct tape handy. I generally fix my dings within a few weeks, and have never had a problem with any water getting in, or cleaning up the ding area after the tape removed.
and believe me, when you live land-locked like me here you would even use wax to fix a ding if it ment not missing a session. I’ll see how it goes and hope for the best.
That’s funny, Sammy, and how true! I use the best I can find, but it ain’t what it used to be. Nowadays they can’t even spell it right half the time. I refuse to buy duck tape!
Yup, that’s the stuff I use. Have covered some pretty raw dings - surf now, patch later, good for a few weeks. Like I say, never had a problem with water intrusion, or glue residue. To each their own.
Have used clear packing tape also, with good results. Never tried the combo of packing / duct tape, but a little backup couldn’t hurt. Like cbass said, the main thing is not to miss the surf just 'cuz of a ding. Most of the problems I’ve seen with duct tape come from leaving it on too long. When I pull the tape off and the foam under it is a different color than the rest of the board, that’s a dead giveaway its been on too long
