Discovery Channel / Poly foam

Last night on the Discovery channel they did a program about hurricanes and how dome houses are probably the best defense against them. They showed how they build them and they spry poly foam as the insulation. they had a big hose and just sprayed the whole inside of the dome then covered it with concrete. Seems to me that this is a lot more dangerous then putting the mix in a mold as far as emissions are concerned and these guys weren't wearing much in the way of protection. If this is the future for defense against hurrianes then poly will definitly be around for a while. They also said that poly is the best insulation there is for homes. Aloha,Kokua

…Kokua, hypocrisy is the word…

do you think the poly foam sprayed into a house is the same quality as surfboard blank foam?

its much the same. PU foam has excellent insulation properties and has a very good memory. it is also good against insect attacks (ants love EPS!) and comes in many different forms and hardnesses from super spongee to rubbery to rock hard. a well ventilated work area solves most workplace safety issues but not the environmental ones.

Howzit jjp, They didn’t mention any thing about that but just the fact that it’s poly foam means that it is out there and being used. If it’s not exactally surfboard quality then with a few tweaks in the formular it could be.Aloha,Kokua

Kokua-------They are using the same foam right here on Maui in the most exspensive homes in Wailea and Makena. Green PU shot on with a gun and hose as attic insulation. Currently the most popular method here on Maui. It’s essentially the same stuff you buy in the can at Home Depot. McDing

The foam used in houses is an MDI based foam versus TDI. This foam cannot achieve the same strenght or small cell structure as a TDI based foam.

To my knowledge, all the other blank manufactures except Homeblown in England uses TDI chemistry. I have never seen Homeblown’s foam, though I have heard it is not as strong as as other TDI based foams.

These foams also use a variety of different blowing agents that are constantly being changed due to air quality standards being changed. They are now very temperature unstable before they are mixed together. Clark Foam always used water as a blowing agent.

…sluggo, there re 2 ; Homeblown and Elova…

…the foam is worst than TDI…
