I has myself one o’dem rotary sanders/polishers with a 180mm pad. Tried finding the 180mm hook and loop sanding disks, but no luck. (Well, I found some but I aint payin 25 squids for shipping)
Has anyone successfully attached the “loop” backing to an abraisive disc, ordinary sand paper or a foam pad?
Not sure where you are located but I just got this awesome quiver of 6" Mirka Abranet discs (50 packs) and they are great. Got them here: http://www.abglovesandabrasives.com/servlet/StoreFront. Free shipping. Works out to less than $1 per disc. Still using regular 8" PSA 100 and 150 (bottom boxes) grit on a Power Pad, but going to the Abranet for 220 and 320 with a nice soft Ferro pad with velcro face. Since the 220 and 320 are used mostly for scratch removal, you can get more life out of them, which is why I use the Velcro for those. Ferro is awesome. Call them up and they’ll make you a custom sanding pad, any density, any face (PSA/Velcro), any thread, any size. Was at my house within a week. The one pictured is the reverse of standard super soft (firmer pad on top of super soft). Guy said alot of surfboard people were ordering it this way. Also use[img_assist|nid=1073986|title=Custom Ferro for Abranet|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=458|height=345] the ferro with the Mirlon Discs (same stuff as Scotchbrite) for buffing out my secret sauce finish coat.
I have found 3M velcro-backed paper sold on a roll… there was a guy on Ebay selling 10 foot lengths of it… can cut it yourself with scissors or razor blade to fit your need. Pretty cool stuff…
I put hooks from 2" self stick velcro on my rubber 6" disk, so I can use the 6" Mirka disks, but then again, I have been a self proclaimed “cheap ass master.” Ha!
Kieth, I searched for that 3m Velcro backed paper. There is a uk based guy selling rolls of it. Will find out if he’s willing to sell shorter lengths. This looks like best alternative so far, as long as it makes fiscal sence obviously…
