Can your please write a list with all parts needed inculding dimensions and stuff? im asking you that because the parts that you have used at the video isnt the same parts as what you wrote in your first therad…thank you it will be very helpful
Well done and thanks. Just a heads up I found the collar nut at ACE.
Also at tractor supply.
The plasti-dip is drying as I type. Mine will be ready to roll tomorrow morning. Couldn’t have been any easier. One thing I will mention, you may have to grind down the PVC coupler to get it to fit as the outside diameter may vary depending on the supplier. I spent about 2 hours playing with the mod including modifying the shoe. Don’t know if I will bother with the vaccume attachement or not as I’m not a fan of being tethered to a vaccume hose.
I don’t use a vacuum either but the exhaust pointed down towards the foam works very well to clear a clean path. I don’t have this attachment on my Makita and alot of the time if you mow over alot of buzzed foam, then the belt tends to jump of track and rub against the shroud. You will be pleasantly surprised if you make or purchase the exhaust.
SUCCESS!!!

Looking good!!
ok i just found me a mint hitachi for $45 with a price sticker still on it for $229!!!
now to find the parts for the mod in Australia!
Bunnings is the equivalent to Lowes over here so i’ll see what I come up with, but was looking the just buy the replacement clark foam handle from foamez since we dont have imperial conduit here so making a handle might be a pain.
Hopefully I dont need any bushes turned up and can find all the bits i want.
You should be able to find anything you need in a good hardware store or home supply even in australia.
Well I went through Bunnings (Lowes equivalent) and brought this tap back.
It looks close but I dont think the thread is coarse enough. It looks like a 2mm pitch thread. So 2mm depth cance for a full revolution.
Now the big issue is that this is an australisn standard tap so every tap in Australia will be running the same thread ![]()
On the bright side my mechanic has a lathe and I might be able to cut me a thread that will give me a 4 or 5mm pitch.
The alternative is to buy the Tap fitting from the US and have it shipped over.
I just ordered mine from Am*zon as I have no idea where to find that here, can’t wait to receive it! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000DZHBMM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
got my parts on amazon too.
all of them? if you do, then links will be very helpful to me.
Got everything except the PVC pieces you can find anywhere. More than enough info in these threads to find what you need. If I can do it you can too. The collar and the right valve are really all you need specific items for…PS the valve pictured above would defeat the purpose of this mod. Try again.
Just finished mine, pretty stocked on the result. I did it on a very cheap planer, so it took more time to modify the shoe, but the result is great. I used a shift knob for cars as the handle, and it works well. There are 3 threads around the collar, rubber fittings that fits good, and the shape of it is pretty comfortable. I found it for 6 usd on a chinese website, but I am sure you can find some pretty cheap ones anywhere.

So, finally this baby is complete after starting it well over a year ago. A total PITA to mod. But I tried to make it pretty and detailed… polished the shoe/baseplate. Sprayed and cut a new bracket. Trimmed, ground & cut to immulate the Clark Foam edition.
I made my handle & knob extra tall becuase I just like the feel a bit better. A couple of my own twist’s, but mostly re-modded using Brians techniques in the vids. I got to again give him, his due props.
Lastly a couple things I ran across on this adventure, Im on the west coast so my local Lowes did not carry the danco9c-23 stems. I had to order them online for the 3 planers Im working on. I ordered Black Oxide lock set collars from the boys @ Fastenal. I also got black oxide set screws for the collar as well. And some nice springs there too. Fastenal was a real good spot for most of the hardware. Home depot carries the pvc fittings… But I like Lowes “Lasco” brand better. but home depot does carry the stem needed for the depth mod. I debated on what adhesives to use, superGlue was the method of choice for the knob. JB weld for the handle & Metal 2part epoxy for the shoe fill and mechanism bond. There it is… it works and feels like da kine…
now I can start ruining perfectly good blanks, lol…
cheers
and props to all those posting their planer mods… such a great thread!
cheers
Finally! i did it too…it was super hard to me since im from Israel and I couldn’t get almost any part that I needed.
In the beginning I bought 2 12 h/c facut steam, which was mistake…i waste a little bit of money but i didnt gave up, i order the 23h/c one.
now for the handle, I couldn’t not even one of the pvc parts, so i took a cap of deodorant, and a cap of a broom, i also didnt find a spring, so i took the spring from my hair cream haha…
thank you very much brian-keep up the good work!

I am trying to finish the Newleaf style depth adjustment on an old Ryobi. Are people cutting down the factory spring to compensate for the bushing holding the threaded fitting into the shoe or making do with something from a hardware store?
So far the mods have gone fine. The stem and collar are the reccomended ones from Amazon. The collar was a little loose on the stem so I filled it in with epoxy (make sure to allow for set screw hole and action) and drilled it to match the stem.
Thanks, J
