hello mates. my dad & i are interested in making a four man outrigger canoe. we are open to all ideas, whether here on sways, or on another forum if you’d like to direct us there. we’re thinking styrofoam/epoxy but are essentially clueless in regards to this kind of project so any help would be appreciated. i understand it’s a bit off topic in a surfboard construction forum but we’re interested in sliding saltwater in various ways so thanks in advance for any thoughts you’d like to share.
Oldy, great project! Im looking at doing a 1 man version. But Im trying to keep it in a very simple form and epoxy/EPS too.
Initial designs Ive drawn from car profiles to give it an appealing masculine look and the main body will have a surfboard style form morphed with the traditional upright body shape.
Single Aku(outrigger) which doubles as the seat and a flat skimboard type Ama (float).
Thats the plan.
I think Outriggers will be the next SUP of the surf because they are able to travel large distances with ease.

freeboard and girth will make for a delightful useable boat
it seems the 20 footers are such boats
any kine -A.K.A . hamma jang hull will school
you tripple time why it's good better best to:
1.start with a credible plan
this is bitchin winter project
2.buy somebody's boat when they up grade
or buy a new hull and finish it off.
if you plan to surf it be specific on that get a surfin'
design,a racer will set you up to buy another
boat upgrade soon
sure they all will surf better than a sunfish
but the surfin ones are a breed apart...
3. buy a new boat

Gary Dierking has excellent plans for several types of Polynesian outriggers.

split up the middle. love it. you’re the swaylocks bard ambrose.
thanks grumpy. those sailers are so sweet & sleek & well-crafted & gorgeous. i’d love to build one of them one day. but at the moment i’m interested in something more sturdy & self-righting, not a sailer but a paddler/surfer, something to throw on the roof of the station wagon & take wave-riding, a four-man surf machine for outside reefs & rivermouths. any ideas? thank you for your help.
oh oneula. by the looks of your photos, it’s exactly the kind of project we’re interested in pursuing! please direct me to a thread where you’re documenting this build. many thanks in advance for your generosity.
Hey oldy. Only just found this thread. Great idea. If I can help you and your dad out let me know. platty.
Here’s some footage of my brother in law and his Lanakila buddies playing around at one of the local surf spots. He points out that raising the ama on a wave on a 6 man outrigger is no easy task. Oh, and don’t drink and drive…
yew llilibel! great footage. loved it.
thanks, friends, for all your replies. the canoe style we’re leaning towards is more like the one the malloy brothers ride in the film one california day. we like that it’s short & stout, relatively lightweight, easier to transport & store, rather than something long & sleek.
i haven’t had much luck searching for such a craft on the net, so any ideas would be most welcome.
thanks ambrose. lots to digest there. cheers. i appreciate it.
thanks platty. would love to have you share your expertise.
Hey Oldy, I mentioned your project to my bro in law. He’s going to contact a couple of people in So Cal who build canoes. I’ll forward you any info.

I think this is the type of canoe design you are looking for.

oh a one off canoe!
what a dream.
Hi Nathan,
The canoe Oneula showed is something I started. It’s sitting in my back yard still unfinshed, but it’s about 95% shaped.
I don’t have any shots, but here’s a run down on what I did.
First I was inspired by Gary Dierking’s Ulua, and I contacted him for some advice. My next door neighbor is a ship designer and we also talked about it a little. Both talked about the differences in making a boat (canoe) to ride waves versus a boat that will paddle better.
What I ended up doing was take a bunch of photos of the 6 man Hawaiian outrigger canoes that we race here in Hawaii. I decided to make my canoe about 19" tall and wide. I drew a cross section of the hull at about the wide point and a smaller one.
Then I built a wooden box about 8 feet long and small enough to add a couple of layers of 2" EPS foam over it. That was to conserve foam. I cut a few pieces of foam using the middle cross section and made sure that there was enough foam around the box to shape. I just followed the shape of the cross sections to make the middle. The front and back sections are solid foam and I basically eye-balled the shape.
Here’s where I made a mistake. I wanted to make my canoe a one man hawaiian outrigger. I had a chance to see a couple and noticed that the rear end is wider and taller than the front. It is not a symetrical shape, but asymetrical. So I started reshaping the hull to make the front more streamlined, but then I started to cut down to the wood box.
Once I had the hull shaped I was planning to vacuum a couple of layers of glass cloth followed by a thick layer of mat then more glass cloth. I was planning on leaving the foam in and glassing the inside too. For the outrigger support, I planned to use 1" aluminum square tube which would be built as a frame and embedded in the foam before the inside is glassed.
Because of the cost of all the glassing materials I stopped work. I have a couple of Wiliwili logs that was planning on making the ama from. Here’s a shot of the canoe as it sits in my back yard. The little round spots are were the carpenter bees have bored into the foam. The dark spots are PU spray foam that used to fill bee holes.
