DIY shaping and glassing room rent San Diego area

Does anyone know a place in the San Diego County area, where I could rent a good/complete spot for shaping and glassing a surfboard myself? I know there are many places for shaping ONLY. But what about if I would like to shape my board and glass it myself? If anyone could let me know that would be great. THANKS!

I have been looking for the same kind of a spot. A friend of a friend has a warehouse in down town San Diego for his construction company and we’ve talked about building 2 rooms (one shape, one glass) to rent out for a few bucks an hour but we haven’t had much time to work on it. I’ll find this thread and send you a PM when we get it rolling. The idea is for a full ventallated(spcheck) room, with basic tools, but might need to bring or borrow things like power tools. If anybody else out there is looking for a spot like this, please let me know, because more interest will get a fire under us. The location is a few blocks from petco park.

The last I heard, Foam E-Z up in Westminster (North Orange County) has a shaping bay and a glassing bay for DIYers.  Rent by the hour.

I wonder if it is cost effective to rent a storage unit that opens to the outdoors in a quite location and do it there? Heck rent two one for shaping and one for glassing???

I just saw their web page and they do rent shaping and glassing bay. It seems this is the best bet. THANKS

Foam-EZ doesn’t rent glassing bays, I’m pretty sure they’ll rent you a shaping bay but then you have to let them glass it for you.

Does anyone have a glassing bay or workspace they are willing to rent out by the day in SD?

Your post is kind of old, but I have been looking a lot lately. Currently I have been shapping out of Bashams, which is by far the best deal $5 for the day, but you have to have them glass your board. For standard clear finish they are not bad, but there resin work is no where near top notch. I will probably keep doing clear finish boards there, but do boards someplace else that I want resn work on so I can take it to a different glasser. Foam EZ is $10 an hour, Bird’s Surf shed in SD rents for $50 or $25 if you buy your blank there. Shaper Studios rents for $25 and have a plan for $200, not sure what the plan is. It says no purchase required to enroll, so I’m not sure if you have to pay for the membership or not to rent the bay.

There is a HUGE liability for glassing, especially poly which is why there arent shops offering that kind of service. Even with waivers a lawsuit can be brought that would sink a shop.

There are so many little things, Spill acetone on yourself and get a reaction you can sue, inhalation reaction to epoxy, you can sue, Topical reaction to epoxy, you can sue.

As you all know the chemicals are dangerous if not handled properly and so many things can happen. To make it work a shop would literally have to have a  camera system setup, as well as an attendant in the room the entire time, By the time you add up the materials the time, and pay for your babysitter you are almost at the point where you can just pay a glasser.

We actually built a 6 rack “Public Glassing Room” here but havent opened it yet and we may never, as things keep coming up as to why its not a good idea.

Wrong thread

Yep.

Somebody has to pay the babysiter.

Personally, I would be really nervious allowing that in my shop.

There’s a reason why they call it “Backyard”.

Maybe that’s the best plan.
