Do i need a stringer

If i use a high density pu foam, 30kg/m3, do i still need a stringer, what is the purpase of the stringer, its only for strenght, or ......,

because i want to shape a board out of a piece of foam, and it has no stringer

The purpose for the stringer is for strength yes! Is it a must? No. Its just that most people prefer a stringer vs that those who don’t. That said, if ur trying to build to cut costs and don’t care about a stringer I think you should be fine. Just consider a deck patch to add strength.

I would say if you want long term strength and no-worries go with pu blank w/stringer. But you can do anything you want-its your board.

surfing in Belgium eh?

shortboard?

dont do pu, use eps instead then go stringerless!

make it 3time 4oz deck, and 2 times 4 oz bottom with that 30 kg blank

epoxy of course, or witness the biggest meltdown

thickness about 2.5m standard

good luck, veel plezier

I’m with you wouter, leave the stringer out and add a few extra layers of 4oz glass.

The main purpose of stringer is to set specific rocker in molded blank (PU or EPS)

Stringer give rigidity to blank so it’s easier to shape and keep rocker when laminating.

Light PE/fiberglass lam have low life, loose original rigidity quickly because of low elongation capability of resin. Stringer maintain pop longer.

Epoxy can have more elongation capability and as EPS core are lighter, lam are thicker stronger and stiffer so you don’t really need a stringer for strengh. Wood stringer in EPS/epoxy board with decent lam schedule (as Wouter decsribe) give a more rigid but really strong and durable board (if no water penetration).

It’s just my opinion.

Sorry for my frenglish

Vosschemie in Lier sells good epoxy (and fibreglass). I use theirs all the time. The only disadvantage is yellowing. But if you use pigment or do a 2component PU finish, the yellowing isn’t noticable (merkbaar).

If you’d like to ask practical questions like:“where do I get this?”, you can always pm me (or wouter probably too) in dutch.
