For airbrushing. Any way to get around it? If not, should I just get a cheapie at Sears??

Oh yeah, there’s definitely ways to get around it. http://www.rtog.net/~jack/ab/ mentions some plus a good deal of other info. The canned air ain’t cheap if you’re doing a lot of spraying but for an occasional board, it might be the way to go.
On the other hand, compressors are such useful little devils.

Buddy of mine has one and it worked just fine once we fixed the air pressure switch he had decided to take apart 'cos he didn’t understand it. You’ll also need one of these - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32872 ( diaphragm-type regulators are better, take my word for it) and http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42444 - a coupler set ( or better yet an accessory set - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42716 ) , a hose and the appropriate adapter for an airbrush. Still only about $100 and you have enough to get yourself started with air tools.

So I can use a compressor for airbrushing and…painting my house! I have a huge 3-story stucco that I started rolling and it takes forever. Now I’ll get the compressor and make my wife happy. The house gets painted pronto and I’ll get to airbrush surfboards forever.

Well, yeah, though you’d definitely want a bigger compressor than that little guy I mentioned if you were gonna be doing a whole house. Check the SCFM ratings of the compressor versus the requirements of the spray setup ( and you’d be looking at a sprayer something like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=7902 which would be real good for stucco) … strictly speaking you’d need something like this puppy : http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=34887 and lots of hoses, 'cos no way are you bringing that up on a ladder or staging with ya, it’d stay in the workshop hooked to 220VAC.
On the other hand, with a compressor like that, you can run just about any air tool going this side of a full-on jackhammer. Like air sanders in disc, orbital, random orbit and straight line. And get the wife to go for it…
