Do PU blanks out-gas?
I’m not an expert on outgassing. But it has been my experience having shaped, glassed, transported, stored and sold hundreds if not thousands of Poly blanks; that by the time they get to the average shaper they are gassed out. Believe it or not you can tell by the “smell”. The odor that a freshly poured and popped out Poly blank puts off is stronger than a blank that has sat for 2 or 3 weeks in the warehouse. Any gas that airs out is gone by the time the average shaper gets his hands on it. Nothing to worry about.
Looking forward to the build thread Greg!
I imagine there is some out-gassing, aka ‘the new car smell’ of whatever compounds and gasses are left over from its production.
Unless the blank is fresh out of the mold, unlikely.
PU foam is described as “closed cell.”
If so, only way to release gas would be to rupture surface cells.
Most important consideration is to allow the “shaped blank temperature” to fully equilibrate with ambient temperature in your glassing room before glassing it.
Any gas expands when heated.
Many thanks to yall. I haven’t built a board in about 5 years. Struggling to remember it all. This one will be interesting, I think.
All the best, GT
I can relate I generally build about a board a year, lately its been fewer and farther between. Seems like I’m fighting that learning curve all over again every time.
Looking forward to this one.
