Had a close call this weekend and am considering the wisdom of a helmet. What types are out there and which is the best.
We have used Gath helmets and found them to be comfy, warm and safe.When my son was small we had a friend who died surfing so we all(my wife,son and I)bought and wore helmets. As my son got older he didn’t want to wear it anymore(not cool?,no one else wears 'em?)we made the rule that he didn’t have to wear it at all times but when big or crowded days came he did.If he had to wear it we all did. I haven’t wore the gath much since then but I have been hit in the helmet once hard and was glad I wore it.Both my wife and son have been hit in the head while wearing a helmet and were stoked to be sporting it.Several of the better surfers here in Santa Cruz sport Gaths so they are getting more acceptance.When you buy make sure it is snug but not too snug.Good fit is important.
Oh yeah, don’t get the one with the visor-its been in the way,makes the fit different and costs way more.

My room mate picked up this helmet in encinitas called a brain bucket (I think), it is cold or I would go out in the garage and look, I will post again the next time I am out there. The main difference between it and the gath is the forehead protection. This one comes further down, and does not have the neoprene seal.
