I like your plan for the 50/50 to start but I would seriously consider the back third of the rail to roll up to the deck…I don’t know what the master LB shapers call it but imagine a reverse down rail or at least pinched.
FIN:
You should put it as far back as you can get it without the trailing edge further back than the tail edge.
This is a good guide…if you want to put it all the way to the back edge of the tail you can change the template of the fin.
In the drawing the red line indicates the ideal alignment of the back edge of the fin with the tail
The X space and Y space are equal
To adjust this fin so that I could put it all the way to the back edge I would cut off the template at the green line, and from this diagram you can adjust your fin template to which ever distance you want by making the same type of measurement.
Sorry for the crude drawing but I don’t have a cad program…and if I did I wouldn’t take the time to learn how to use it!! This is just a simple mock-up of a fin that I’ve been working on.
[img_assist|nid=1064977|title=longboard, with d- fin|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427]Thanks for the advice woody, never thought of a reverse down rail. Still have to roll the rails down abit more, soften them up and then think about my harder edge in the tail, was hoping to have a little bit of release to liven up the turns. ? ?
I placed the fin where i thought looked right. But will take you drawing in to account, that diagram is great !! saved it to my Surf notes.
Zac
nothing like a photo to make things clear…
what a bitchin cool board!
the proportion of the size of fin to board
looks a little fin area heavy in the balance.
the customary technique of adding a
resin and rope clear glass bead
around the fin leading and trailing edge
sometimes up to 1/2 ‘’ will make the fin even bigger.
see the fin on the Phil edwards hobie.
this fin is is even a little big for my crossed eyes.
yours is the eye that is the final judge
consider the wear characteristics of fin on sand
and delam after erosion and the bead
or a glass core on the wood fin starts to make sense.
the historic hot boards with D or area fins are indeed
combined with up rails in the tail that led
to the progression to the Vee bottom tail
after the fin area started being reduced…
riding these shapes with mega area will
change your surfing technique for the best
and forever.
…ambrose…
Gday Ambrose, not sure if its the photo but when we placed the fin on the board we were stressing it looked to small. will have another look tommorow and see if my eyes are playing tricks on me haha. Will definatly try and put a glass edge around the fin, love the look of that detail.
"riding these shapes with mega area will, change your surfing technique for the best and forever....ambrose..."
Yep Yep hopefully he will be cruising like robert august at Cape St Francis…
Zac
Hey Zack, that mock-up looks pretty good actually. Like Ambrose said, you can add quite a bit of resin bead and end up with a larger fin. If you think about doing this you can check the archives. Also I've been working on a similar fin on my blog. It has a lot more resin than just a bead but the technique is pretty much the same. One thing I left off the project on my blog is the use of fin rope...got to leave out a few minor details...I think I did mention the use of milled glass to reinforce but there's rope in there too. www.dwsurf.blogspot.com
O r knee dropping at Yokahama like diff
behind Phil edwards…

The board is finally finished guys here is some photos of the finished fin/ board. Board goes really well and the kid is stoked. Thanks for all your help with the template and advice. good on ya Zac !
how deep did that D end up being , and how long a base , please ?
did you end up with much of a glass or rovings bead around it , in the end ?
[it’s a little hard for me to tell from the pictures , sorry]
last request …
please , could you let us know [?photos?] how it surfs for him ?
cheers !
ben
Hey ben, will try and measure it out next time I see him. I think it was woody who gave me the template so he should have the exact details aswell, although i dont think i printed the photo to scale so its probably a bit smaller. We still cant tell if the fin looks to small on the board haha. But he says its fine, and hes really loving it. We didnt do a bead around the fin, just kept it how we foiled it out. theirs a build up[img_assist|nid=1065375|title=Remy Riding|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=349][img_assist|nid=1065376|title=/|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427] of glass at the base behind the fin and a little bit at the front. [img_assist|nid=1065374|title=…|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427]Heres some more photos of an afternoon at palm beach. The guy parked next to us was convinced the fin was way to far back ha
hey who cares what the guy next to you thinks ...
if it works for remy and HE'S loving it , ain't that what it's all about eh !
as long as he's having fun on it , great stuff zac ! be proud of what you've made there !
by the way ...would a 'ballpark' estimate of 9" base , 9+" deep be in the rough vicinity , for your 'D' fin ?? [...or , is it a bit bigger ?? ]
cheers
ben
is that south [kiddies corner] or mid to north palmy , zac ?
i ask , because i have a 1960s photo of me and my dad , sitting on the bonnet of the holden , taken on a grassed area around ? mid palmy?
[i could post it here for you but.... yawwn ....for others , eh ? haha ... ]
remy looks a bit like '[young sir'*] josh who used to post here a few years ago ...have you told him [remy] about sways and this thread ? [*that was 'speedneedle josh's name for his younger namesake , to avoid confusion ]
cheers heaps , for the photo of it being surfed ... i always enjoy when people post shots of their finished boards being ridden , a good idea on a SURFBOARD design site like sways , i reckon ?! ...
ben
Hey Chippy, I have the templates I sent Zac in PDF format. Don't remember where I got them but I'm sure from someone here on Sways. If you want a set PM me where to e-mail them and I'll send em ASAP.
Woody
cool....
re: young ben and dad at palm beach 1960s photo ....
don't laugh too hard ,
my parents are british
[and this was the era when we used to sing 'god save the queen ' * at school assemblies ]
woody , thanks for the offer , not sure if i can do the pdf techy stuff but hey it don't hurt to send it eh ?
cheers
ben
[ * is it really any wonder that some from that era ended up closet gays , eh ...?]
Hey Chip I took the photos today down at the very north end close to the lighthouse. Kiddies is usually just a right, we got it pretty good down their about 4 months ago, sucky little peelers with just us out and the amazing Derek Hynd. Would love to see your photo, ive seen some images of how it used to be in the 70s and the carpark area used to be a massive sand dune. Do you remember it being like that ?
And no i should let him know about the post, he may enjoy it. funny you mention “speed needle” i saw a windsurfer in the council clean up which said speed needle any connection ??[img_assist|nid=1065379|title=North Palmy|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427]
